Gees village

Gees is a small and idyllic country village in the province of Drenthe, and it is where we began our hike yesterday. Along the quiet roads are many farm houses with thatched roofs, like the one on the photo. Because part of Gees is a protection area, new buildings are scarce and so the village managed to maintain its original character...

...where apparently time stood still. Look at this rusty bicycle! Even though the tires and basket seem in rather good shape, I wonder if it is still in use..

  2. We zijn er lang geleden geweest en hebben er rondgefietst en een kaasboerderij bezocht. Het is daar prachtig. Inderdaad of de tijd er heeft stilgestaan.

  5. Idyllic is certainly the right word. I'd love to see the inside of some of these houses and wonder if they've been modernized. That rusty old bike doesn't look too good, but hey, if it works, that's all that counts!

  7. I bet it is Marleen ☺ The thatched roofs are beautifully maintained there, I always think of England for some reason when I see thatched roofs.

  8. A nice view of the past. I like seeing the bike parked by the door which lends to life behind the doors.

  9. What a beautiful idyllic village. In Afrikaans "gees" means spirit. I knew you would be able to say/pronounce the word Gatberg. It's difficult for anyone else without Dutch/Afrikaans knowledge.

  12. I love the thatched roof. And the bicycle scene is very Dutch. I'm sure it's still being used. :)
