The Thinker by Rodin

This plaster model of ´The Thinker´ by Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) is a huge and powerful sculpture. It shows a nude male figure sitting on a rock with his chin resting on one hand as though deep in thought. It was initially a figure for a doorway surround called ´The Gates of Hell´, based on the epic poem ´The Divine Comedy´ by Dante.
The plaster sculpture is part of the exhibition 'Rodin - Genius at Work', currently at the Groninger Museum until April 30.

  1. Yes, De Denker by Rodin. How could I forget that? Thanks for reminding me!

  2. I took many photos of the Thinker in the garden of the Rodin museum in Paris. It's a phenomenal piece. But hard to photograph because so many people were always standing up close to it!

By the way, I'm back on blogger. My attempt to work with Weebly.com didn't work out.

    1. hi Lowell, this exhibition in Groningen was as a fact organised by the Museé Rodin in Paris and the Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal. So a number of sculptures you saw in Paris are now in Groningen.

  4. It's quite a work, very familiar to all. His Pierre de Wissant and the burghers of Calais would be my personal favourites of his work.

  5. An outstanding and beautiful sculpture. When I was young, one of my aunts brought me a small statue of this back from her trip to Europe. I wonder what happened to it. :)

  7. He was a genius -- we have been to a museum with some of his original drawings and small working models for the larger sculptures he would create. It was most interesting and I would love to go again or to this exhibition you show.
