View from the Reidehoeve visitor center

Adjacent to the Joh.Kerkhovenpolder, of which I told you in my previous posts, is the Breebaartpolder. This 63 hectares (155 acres) large piece of land was transformed into a polder in 1979, and has become known for its extensive bird life. Visitors find paths for hiking and cycling, a hut for birdwatching, and a visitor center called Reidehoeve. The photo above was taken through one of the windows of the visitor center, where -as you can see- the window sills were also used for exhibiting items.

  1. Dat is nog een vrij jonge polder eigenlijk.

  3. Hi Marleen. Your posts are so interesting. Is that a live Skimmer in the window? They are palargtic migrfants in the very Southern tip of South Africa. I have never seen one! Have a great day. Jo

    1. Hi Jo, I think it´s an Arctic Tern, what we call ´Noordse stern´ in Dutch, as they are common here. (But anyone please correct me if I´m wrong). The one on the photo is stuffed and belongs to the exhibition.

  10. It's an enticing place to me. I'd love to bike through the polder! Also, it is a good thing when such land is kept "natural" for use by all the people rather than sold to some developer. I've got a question: What does opvallend and onopvallend mean in English?

  14. Thanks so much, Marleen, for your explanation. It makes perfect sense. So often we walk through life and our towns and cities seeing only the things that stand out and completely miss some of the things in the background which might, in some instances, be of more importance or more interesting that those garnering all the attention.
