Zandeweer church

As I mentioned in yesterday's post, the church in Zandeweer dates from the Middle Ages and was built in the 13th century.

There is a 15th century bell tower standing separate from the church. During WW2 the Germans took the 2 bells from the tower to melt them down, though when the war was over the bells were found unharmed.

View to the back of the church. Our hike continues..

  1. That looks a very interesting church. There are a few churches with separate towers in the Fens near here and I understand this was because they had a lot of trouble getting the towers to stand on such soft ground and they built them away from the church to lessen any danger to the main structure. That's a very dainty little spire on top of the tower too, that's quite common in my area too especially when the tower had a full set of bells - the tower could not take the weight of both the bells and a stone spire.

  2. We have nothing like this in the U.S., so I find it most interesting. If it was build in the 13th century it must have been a Roman Catholic church. Is this still the case? I can't image any building that old (well, I can as I've see Notre Dame in Paris) but it's in amazing shape. I'd love to see the inside. Is it still being used as a church? Your photos are wonderful and I love that big blue sky!

  4. Hi Marleen...I was giving you a hard time and trying to trick you. So sorry. What I was getting at is that there weren't any non-Catholic churches in the 13th century. A few reformers tried to change things in the one and only Roman Catholic Church but didn't have much headway until Luther came along in the 16th century! :) Or, I could be wrong and this was a Protestant sect of some sort in the 13th century. But I don't think so. Hope you have a great day tomorrow. Oh, wait, it is tomorrow there. You folks over in the homeland are very confusing! :))
