Iceland (2008)

It's the 1,000th (!) post on my blog today, showing a surreal landscape of boiling mudpools and steaming fumaroles in Hverir, a geothermal area in the north of Iceland. It was a weird and overwhelming experience to walk here, with the smells, the colours, the heat..

Iceland (2008)

This is the harbour of Husavik, a town on the north coast of Iceland on the shores of Skjalfandi bay. As different species of whales frequently visit the bay, whale watching has become very popular here. Boat tours are made with small fishing boats, and take about 3 hours. We were lucky to spot several 9 meters long Northern Bottlenose whales (in Dutch: Noordelijke Butskoppen) and dolphins.

14 years have passed but I remember very well watching these puffins, they were such cute little birds!

Each Saturday I take a dive into our photo archives and choose one.

These are rooftop decorations on a traditional Icelandic house. A photo taken during our first visit to Iceland in 2000.

Glaumbaer Folk Museum

These farm houses that you can see in this open air museum in northern Iceland date from different periods in the 19th century. They were all built in the turf construction style, which was common in rural Iceland then.

Deze boerderijtjes die te zien zijn in dit openluchtmuseum in noord IJsland dateren van verschillende periodes in de 19e eeuw. Ze zijn allemaal gebouwd van turf, zoals toen op het platteland van IJsland de gewoonte was. 

The Icelandic grass grows very thickly, making this turf and the soil a very strong unit.

Het IJslandse gras is erg dik, waardoor het met de turf en de grond een erg stevig geheel vormt. 

Jökulsárlón iceberg lake

These pictures are taken from the amphibious vehicle I showed you yesterday.

Deze foto's zijn genomen vanaf het amfibievoertuig dat ik je gisteren liet zien.

Jökulsárlón has been a setting for several Hollywood movies, like 'A View to a Kill', 'Die Another Day' and 'Batman Begins'.

Rond en op het Jökulsárlón meer zijn opnames gemaakt voor diverse Hollywood films, zoals 'A View to a Kill', 'Die Another Day' en 'Batman Begins'. 

Eventually the ice melts and floats to the sea. There the road crosses at that narrow part.

Uiteindelijk smelt het ijs en drijft het naar zee. De weg gaat er op dat smalle gedeelte overheen.

A very tourist thing to do but definitely not one to miss when you are visiting Iceland, is a tour with this amphibious vehicle on Jökulsárlón iceberg lake.

Erg toeristisch maar absoluut niet iets om over te slaan als je IJsland bezoekt, is een tochtje met dit amfibievoertuig op het ijsbergenmeer Jökulsárlón.

Jökulsárlón is a glacial lake in south east Iceland, on the borders of Vatnajökull National Park. It covers an area of about 18 km² (6.9 sq miles), with a depth of 248 metres (814 ft)!. It is quite spectacular to see the icebergs, coming from the glacier, floating in all kinds of sizes and shapes. I will show you a few more pictures tomorrow.

Jökulsárlón is een gletsjermeer in zuidoost IJsland, aan de rand het het Vatnajökull National Park. Het beslaat een oppervlakte van ongeveer 18 km² en heeft een diepte van 248 meter! Het is een erg spectaculair gezicht om de ijsbergen, komend van de gletsjer, te zien ronddrijven in allerlei vormen en afmetingen. Morgen zal ik je daar een paar foto's van laten zien.

Iceland weather

Apparently there is a saying on Iceland that goes: if you don't like the weather, just wait 5 minutes. Well, the second picture was taken less than 15 minutes after the first one. I guess that proves a lot..

Er schijnt een gezegde te zijn op IJsland dat als volgt gaat: als het weer je niet aanstaat, wacht dan maar even 5 minuten. Nou, de onderste foto is minder dan een kwartier later dan de eerste foto genomen, dus dat zegt wel wat..
