Ter Apel Monastery (2)

This is in one of the wings of the Ter Apel Monastery. Even after several renovations (note the central heating on the right wall underneath the windows) it's not hard to imagine that this has existed for centuries. As the monastery is located along the ancient trade route from Münster to Groningen, passing travelers and pilgrims once found a place of hospitality and dedication here.

I chose B&W for the first photo, though very much liked the kind of mint-green that this part of the arched ceiling was painted in.

Monday mural

A nice and nostalgic looking mural in B&W, spotted on a wall in the Gierstraat in the centre of Haarlem.

I'm linking to Monday Mural.

Wild

It makes a world of difference whether you are at the sunny and crowded beaches of the south, or here at the wild north coast of Tenerife. This photo was made at the Playa del Roque de Las Bodegas.

TURV

When we passed this newly renovated farm with its thatched roof in the small village of Exloo last December, my eye caught the word 'TURV'. Turv?? I made a few photos and later searched on the web what it meant. First I learned that this farm was built in 1722! And since very recently it's the location for the Turv Exloo Distillery, hence the word on the roof. The Smakman family will produce their own local whisky, gin, and wodka here.

Oh and before I forget, 'Turv' is an old spelling of the Dutch word 'turf', in English 'turf' or 'peat'. I like how they made the word come out of the roof.

"Self Portrait of a Dreamer"

by Joseph Klibansky (Cape Town, 1984). It is made from fiber-reinforced plastic, resin, fiberglass, silk flowers, acrylic and iron. The sculpture is part of the exhibition 'Nick & Simon - OPEN', currently in Museum de Fundatie in Zwolle.
It caught this lady's attention!

Antwerp Central

Definitely not to miss during a stay in Antwerp is a visit to the main railway station, even if you don't arrive by train. The original station building was constructed between 1895 and 1905.

During a reconstruction between 1998 and 2007 the station was transformed from a terminus to a through station. This allows high-speed trains to travel through Antwerp Central without the need to turn around. The station is now widely regarded as the finest example of railway architecture in Belgium.
I'll show you some more photos tomorrow.

The Hand of Oterdum

Last Sunday I told you about the history of the small village of Oterdum and its cemetery on the dike near Delfzijl, in the north east of the province of Groningen. This monument, also at the cemetery, marks the exact location of where the church once was.
The `Hand of Oterdum´ was created by M. Meesters. After the original hand, made of bronze, was stolen in 2011 a new hand of synthetic material was made to replace it.

Canada (2012)
During our trip through British Columbia and Alberta we passed the spot where in 1885 the Canadian Pacific Railway was completed. A monument was placed to remember this historical moment.

Nice to tell is that in the years 1923-1926 my grandfather was in Canada and actually made this journey by train. Hoping to be able to start a new life there, he travelled by train from the east all the way to the west coast and Vancouver Island in the end. Some of the letters that he wrote home have been kept until today, giving us a detailed insight of where he went and what he did, and how life was in the days of cowboys and Indians.

Have a nice weekend! :)

At the exhibition

I'm still not very comfortable doing it, however I am going to try to photograph people more often as I admire my fellow photo-bloggers who do, and do it easily..
This is from a while ago, at the Groninger Museum.

The Human Image

Another exhibition in Museum De Fundatie worth seeing now is 'In Search of Meaning - The Human Image in a Global Perspective', with a variety of human figures from all corners of the world that contain a deeper (and sometimes political) meaning.
This one is named 'Feeling Material V' by Antony Gormley (Great Britain, 1950) and shows a person who becomes part of the flow of energy that we call nature. A bit cryptic if you ask me, but the image is interesting enough and invites the viewer to have his or her own thoughts..

De Rode Pannen prison

During our visit to the National Prison Museum in Veenhuizen we joined a guided tour in cell block building 'De Rode Pannen' ('The Red Tiles'), a convict prison built in 1939-1940. De Rode Pannen has 46 cells, and was used until 2008 for those prisoners who were extremely agressive and hard to handle. With specially trained warders and a special approach it was tried to 're-educate' these men. A stay for about 3 to 4 weeks was usually enough to change their behaviour.
Since 2012 the Prison Museum is allowed to organise tours inside this building. It is however still 'ready for use'.

Taken from the same spot as the first photo, but now looking up to the (partly) glass ceiling, and one of the cell doors on the right.

weekend reflections

This photo shows glass shelves with old ceramic pots, seen from above with a reflection that seemed intensified by the many lights in this room of the Fries Museum.
And yes, I'm in the reflection too.. ;)
