Mao suit

In the courtyard of the Rijksmuseum Twenthe in Enschede is this sculpture of a suit called ´Legacy Mantle´. It was the kind of uniform coat that Mao Zedong (1893-1976) used to wear in public, and in the West it eventually turned into an icon for the Maoist period and a symbol for Chinese communism in general.

It was made by Sui Jianguo (1956), a contemporary Chinese artist.

Monastery herb garden

View into the Ter Apel Monastery courtyard with the herb garden, seen from the first floor. Not much to do there in Winter obviously other then waiting for Spring. Still a pretty view I think..

Signs of Autumn

I visit the Buitenplaats Museum in Eelde several times a year and love to wander around in the museum garden. Watching the change of seasons never bores..

Here Autumn seems to be nibbling on the leaves!

Frogs in a pond

More photos from Sweden will follow, but today a picture from my visit to De Buitenplaats Museum and its garden in Eelde last Thursday, where I spotted these two frogs in one of the ponds.

I'm linking to Saturday's Critters on Eileen's blog. Happy weekend :)

More Autumn colours

There is so much to discover in the garden of Museum de Buitenplaats in Eelde, with its many walkways, ponds, and sculptures. Beautiful in all seasons, though I must say nothing beats these Autumn colours. This photo was taken last Friday.

The pond

Another view from yesterday afternoon, taken in the garden of Museum de Buitenplaats in Eelde. The sculpture in the pond is ´Atlas´, a bronze by Dutch sculpturor Lotta Blokker (1980). In Greek mythology, Atlas was the Titan who held up the sky. This sculpture however shows Atlas holding up another man.

Stinsen path

This narrow path known as the Stinsenpad or 'Stinsen path' belongs to the garden of De Buitenplaats Museum in Eelde. Here grow Stinsen plants, which is the Dutch and German name of a group of plants that were introduced a long time ago to grow and run wild on certain places like old country estates, farmsteads, and former city walls. Stinsen plants usually bloom in Spring. I don't know the name of the pretty white flowers on the photo, but their fragrance was gorgeous!

The word stins originally comes from West Frisian stienhus (Dutch steenhuis) 'stone house', shortened to stins. A stins is a former stronghold or villa in the province of Friesland. Many stinsen carry the name 'state' (related to English 'estate').

A sign of Spring?

I enjoyed a visit to Museum Buitenplaats in Eelde yesterday, and of course also had a look in its beautiful museum garden. No green leaves yet however, we need to be patient..!  :)

See-through fence

I'm standing outside the Jacob Cramerpark here, next to the museum in Assen (see also my posts from last Monday and Tuesday). Somehow the hanging branches fit very well with the fence.

Jacob Cramerpark

Following up on yesterday´s post, I´m still at the roof garden of the Drents Museum and standing almost on the top, maybe you can recognize the 'roof-like' shape. The buildings in front belong to the old part of the museum, while the new part (under me) was built partly underground.
This roof garden is known as the Jacob Cramer-Park and is open to visitors during museum opening hours. Jacob Cramer (1899-1998) was a politician and the Queens Commissioner (in Dutch: Commissaris van de Koningin) of the province Drenthe from 1951 until his retirement in 1964.

Museum Visitors

After my visit to the Drents Museum in Assen last week, I also walked through the Jacob Cramerpark, the museum park. The sculpture, showing three people looking at/through a frame, is called `Museumbezoekers' or 'Museum Visitors', and is part of the museum's art collection. It was created by Dutch sculptor Bert Kiewiet (1918-2008).
The park, here to my right, is in fact a roof garden and is built upon the roof of the underground part of the museum. I will show you more photos later.

museum garden fence

We found this eye catching ornamental fence at the back side of the garden belonging to Museum De Buitenplaats in Eelde, which we visited last Sunday. It's lovely, isn't it?

sculptures by Natasja Bennink

The garden belonging to Museum De Buitenplaats in Eelde is very much worth visiting as well. These are a few pictures of sculptures we found there created by Natasja Bennink (1974). This one is called 'Kom eten, kom drinken' ('Come eat, come drink'). It's so sweet, don't you think?

This sculpture is called 'Jezina'

'Ons daaglijks brood' ('Our daily bread')
