Mist fountain

I have showed you pictures from this artwork a while ago, but then the mist fountain wasn't operative yet. These seven meter high children's heads are the first thing you see when you leave the Leeuwarden train station. They were made by Spanish sculpturor Jaume Plensa (1955); he named it 'LOVE'.

A view from the other side with the train station in the background. As for the 'fountain', I think the effect that the mist gives is a bit minimal. When I passed it in the afternoon there was quite a lot of wind which made the mist hardly visible anymore. On the other hand, it's a nice and original work of art.

Faces

Two seven meter high stone children's heads form a specially for Leeuwarden designed mist fountain. Facing each other with closed eyes, the sculpture by Spanish artist Jaume Plensa (1955) is called 'LOVE'. A local boy and girl aged 10-14 were models for the art work.

The city of Leeuwarden is European Capital of Culture 2018, the mist fountain is one of its projects. It is placed in front of the central station, and will start working this Spring. I am curious how it will look like with water!

Getting wet..

Detail of a fountain in the garden of Paleis Het Loo. Het Loo Palace, meaning 'The Woods Palace', is located in Apeldoorn. The former royal palace is now a state museum, but more about that later.

Tea anyone?

Following up on yesterday's post, this photo was also taken at the Rottneros Flower and Sculpture Garden in Sunne, Sweden.
Isn't this a funny variety in the many kinds of small garden fountains that are for sale these days? :)

Christmas #4 - Christmas tree sale

Christmas trees for sale across the library at the Wirdumerdijk in Leeuwarden, yesterday afternoon.
In the background is the Mercuriusfontein (Mercury Fountain), dating from 1923 and created by the German sculpturor Gustav Adolf Bredow. The fountain symbols the prosperity of Leeuwarden and surroundings.

Cheers

Today is going to be the hottest dat ever, so we have been promised. It's also the day of Le Grand Départ of the Tour de France in Utrecht, I wish them good luck in this heat!

The photo was taken on the Grote Markt in Antwerp, with the Brabo Fountain on the right and Silvius Brabo throwing a hand, like I showed you earlier.
The cold beer was my husband's, I enjoyed an ice-cold ice tea :)

Have a great weekend everybody, stay cool if you can and take care of yourselves.

Brabo Fountain

Silvius Brabo, here as a statue on top of the Brabo Fountain at the Grote Markt in Antwerp, is a mythical Roman soldier who is said to have killed a giant called Druon Antigoon. This giant terrorised the people of the city by asking money from them when they passed the bridge of the river Scheldt. When they didn´t want to or couldn´t pay, he cut off their hand and threw it in the river.
Brabo then cut off the hand of the giant, and the statue shows how he threw it into the river.

Later this story was also used to explain the name Antwerp, meaning Hand Werpen in Dutch or Hand Throwing in English.

sculpture and fountain

I'm not sure I have seen a sculpture with bicycles before, so I had to stop and photograph it! ;)  It is one of four groups of large and impressive sculptures circling the fountain.
The location is 't Zand, one of the biggest squares in the city of Bruges, Belgium.
