Rainy day

View from inside the Groninger Museum across the city canal towards the Stationsstraat and bus station, on a rainy day last December.

Empty

Benches and swings in the park next to the Gösta Serlachius Museum in Mänttä, Finland. The sultry heat (+30°C, over 86°F) was probably the reason they stayed empty that afternoon.

Huys Ricmode (Ricmode House) originally dates from 1612 and is located at the Rijkmanstraat in Deventer. It is a national heritage site. The detached home has 4 floors and is a former warehouse. If you like to see more, Huys Ricmode can be found on Facebook.

Social sofa

This mosaic bench in Woldendorp is one of ten social sofas in ten different villages along the Dutch Wadden Sea coast. Inhabitants were asked to bring ideas for a design that should fit to the theme "Wadden Sea coast".

The social sofas are part of a project called Kiek Over Diek (local dialect for "view over the dike"). The project was started to make the natural and landscape elements of this area, that is on the Unesco World Heritage list though not widely known, more visible to people.

Bicycle route signs

During our hike we saw these 2 poles, showing the colours of both the German and the Dutch flag. Back home I googled and found out that they mark the 84 km long 'Grenzsteinroute' , a bicycle route along the border between Germany and the Netherlands. During the route a number of boundary stones ('Grenzsteine' in German) are passed. hence the name. The route starts in Coevorden (NL) then goes to Schoonebeek (NL), Twist (Germany), Zwartemeer (NL), Rütenbrock (Germany), and ends in Ter Apel (NL). Or vice versa of course :)

More from our Sunday hike

Two more photos taken last Sunday near the village of Ter Apel. Here our path passes a farm / B&B...

...offering a place to sit and rest.

Bench

This nice wooden bench belonged to one of the stalls of the antique market (I think) across the street that day in Delft.

Phew!

This bench along the Hunebedweg, an unpaved road near Odoorn, repeats what it probably hears most when people go sit on it: "hè hè", meaning: "phew"!

Mosaic bench

This mosaic bench at the Hoofdstraat in Stadskanaal pictures the growth of the city after WW2. Philips opened a factory in Stadskanaal in 1955, which meant a lot of jobs and economical growth obviously. New residential areas came, as well as a theater and a library. In 2004 Philips decided to stop making products here and closed its factory.
On the bench are photos of a number of houses and buildings of that time.

Children of the local Gabriël Dam primary school put the tiny glass mosaic pieces on this bench.

I´m linking to Tom´s Tuesday´s Treasures.

PS. Happy birthday to my mom!

Bähler-Boerma Bench

Students of the Terra Agricultural College designed this Gaudi-like "social sofa" on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of "Ons Dorpshuis" ("Our Church Hall") in the village of Eelde.

Ons Dorpshuis in Eelde is the oldest church hall in the Netherlands, and it was founded by Mrs G. Bähler-Boerma in 1915. The mosaic bench (known as "Bähler-Boerma Bench") was placed here in April 2015, next to the new roundabout near Ons Dorpshuis.

Around the King's tree

When crown-prince Willem-Alexander became King of the Netherlands in April 2013, 408 Dutch towns planted a lime-tree. To plant a 'koningslinde' or 'King's lime-tree' on the occasion of an abdication is a national tradition since Princess Wilhelmina became Queen in 1898. These trees get a special place and often have a small fence or benches around them.
The leaf-shaped benches around the 'King's-tree' in Leeuwarden, here on this photo, are at the Wirdumerdijk in front of the library.

Papenstraat Zwolle

This narrow street in Zwolle is named Papenstraat, or Pastor Street, because the home of ´den Pape´ ('de pastoor', 'the Pastor') was located here until 1580. Before that this street was called Keizerstraat, Emperor Street, named after emperor Frederick III who gave Zwolle permission to manufacture coins.

Quack quack..

Waagplein, Leeuwarden. While this lady was absorbed in her book, two ducks came from the nearby canal and approached her. They watched her -quack quack- waited for a while -quack quack-, came as close as they thought safe, quack quacked again softly to get her attention, but despite all their efforts she didn't look up and so that black bag that she was leaning on wasn't probably filled with bread after all..

Have a great weekend! :)
