Aster

This type of Aster blooms in September/October and is called 'herfstaster' in Dutch. (lit: Autumn Aster). I took this photo about 2 weeks ago in our garden. Did you know that the name Aster comes from an ancient Greek word meaning "star"? (from Wikipedia)

Chrysanthemums

There's still colour in the garden from the Chrysanthemums, like this yellow one in full bloom.

Picking pears

October is the month for picking pears from the tree in our garden. They are what we know as 'stoofperen': culinary or cooking pears. It is a Dutch cultivar named 'Gieser Wildeman'. As they are dry and hard, we only eat them after several hours of cooking in water, with a cinnamon stick, lemon peel, some sugar and some red wine added. They come as a side dish at dinner. Delicious!

Holding on

One or two coneflowers are still holding on..  and it's very much appreciated! Photo taken this weekend.

Dragonfly

This dragonfly sat on a stone flowerpot in our garden earlier today when I caught it on camera.

Hummingbird hawk-moth

Every now and then we spot one -or sometimes two- hummingbird hawk-moths (kolibrievlinder in Dutch) on the buddleja in our garden. Apparently our warm and long Summer attracts them. It's amazing to see them behave like actual hummingbirds.

We tried before to photograph them, it's not that easy as they are very agile and don't stay long at one place. I made these photos today.

Coneflowers

With the wonderful late Summer weather here, we are still enjoying the colourful coneflowers in our garden. Have a nice weekend!

Small white

Small whites ('koolwitje' in Dutch) are also common butterflies here. Maybe not as colourful as the peacock butterfly from yesterday's photo, though a beautiful sight as well.

The peacock butterfly ('dagpauwoog' in Dutch) is a common butterfly here. I took this one on a buddleja in our garden a few days ago.

A baby bird #2

 More! More!

They will be going into the big world soon. I hope they'll make it!

Note: I took this photos last Saturday afternoon. Sunday morning it was totally quiet in and around the bird house. I was told once that birds tend to fly out early mornings so that they'll have the maximum daylight to get used to "the world outside". Clever thinking, isn't it? :)

A baby bird #1

Food! I want food!

The baby blue tits in one of the bird houses in our garden seem ready to leave the nest soon. This one was leaning out so far that I expected it to fall out any moment, but it didn't.

The parents are determined to feed their youngsters as many times per day as they can.

They fly to and from the bird house every few minutes. Being a bird parent means working hard! But the young birds keep calling out for food.

Magnolia

The magnolia tree in our garden earlier this week. We are having very warm Spring weather! Can you spot the sparrow?

Blackbird

The blackbird is commonly seen here throughout the year. During cold winter days they love to eat some oatmeal that we put in the bird feeder house for them.
