Zandvoort water tower

The water tower at the Thorbeckestraat in Zandvoort is 48 m high and was built around 1950. The tower had an active role in the water supply until 1997. Its designer is the architect J. Zietsma.
A fire in 2001 destroyed a lot of the interior, at that time a restaurant was located in the upper part. Since then the water tower has been closed and its future remains uncertain; due to a huge maintenance backlog it will cost a lot of money to give it a new destination..

Coevorden water tower

The water tower in Coevorden dates from 1914 and was designed by architect J.P. Hazeu. The 32,2 meter high tower is located near the Van Heutszpark, the town's park. The structure was thoroughly renovated in 2004 and was given the status national heritage site. In 2014 the outside was taken on which made it look brand-new again.

Since I grew up in the town of Coevorden and lived there for 35 years I must have rode this road (Dr Picardtlaan) a zillion times by bicycle. Lots of memories!

Have a wonderful weekend :)

Water tower

Halfway the marked walking trail around Zuidlaren we crossed the premises of the former pychiatric institution ´Dennenoord´. The oldest buildings on this huge area of almost 91 hectare (about 225 acres) date from the end of the 19th century, and have been registered as cultural heritage since 2007.
The water tower that you see at the end of this lane was built in 1895 and provided the water for the people who lived at Dennenoord. It isn't in use anymore, but was rescued from demolition when it officially received the status of national monument. Besides a 'private' water tower, Dennenoord also had its own church.

Soestdijk Palace watermill

The Soestdijk Palace watermill was built in 1680 and is one of the oldest in the Netherlands. It is located in the park behind Soestdijk Palace (which was the home of King Willem-Alexander's grandparents for many years).
Originally it was a combination of water tower and wind-watermill, and there was a grain mill in the tower as well. The water inside the water tower was meant for 2 fountains in the gardens, and with the power the mill created the water was then able to 'reach' the fountains.

Nowadays the Palace shop can be found inside the large round tower. The entrance to the shop however, is clearly a mix of (very) old and new!
