Soestdijk Palace watermill

The Soestdijk Palace watermill was built in 1680 and is one of the oldest in the Netherlands. It is located in the park behind Soestdijk Palace (which was the home of King Willem-Alexander's grandparents for many years).
Originally it was a combination of water tower and wind-watermill, and there was a grain mill in the tower as well. The water inside the water tower was meant for 2 fountains in the gardens, and with the power the mill created the water was then able to 'reach' the fountains.

Nowadays the Palace shop can be found inside the large round tower. The entrance to the shop however, is clearly a mix of (very) old and new!

Oranjerie

Dit is de ingang van de Oranjerie van Paleis Soestdijk.

This is the entrance of the Oranjerie (Orangery) of Soestdijk Palace.

Vroeger werden hier in de winter de kuipplanten bewaard, die 's zomers buiten staan. Het woord 'oranjerie' (of 'orangerie') komt van het Franse oranger: sinaasappelboom.

The original use of the orangery was a place to keep the plants in tubs that are outside during the Summer, safe from frost in Winter. The word 'orangery' (or 'orangerie') comes from the French 'oranger': orange tree.

Soestdijk Palace park

Achter het paleis ligt het in landschapsstijl aangelegde Koningin Emmapark met gazons, een slingerende beek, een grote vijver, en vooral veel bos! Door de regen van vorige week was alles groen en fris.

Behind the palace is the Queen Emma landscape style park with lawns, a meandering creek, a large pond, and above all, a big forest! Because of the rain that fell last week everything was green and fresh. 

De paden zijn genoemd naar leden van het Koninklijk huis. 

The paths are named after the members of the Royal family.

 Paleis Soestdijk is met het park één van de grootste landgoederen in de provincie Utrecht.

Soestdijk Palace

Gisteren bezochten we Paleis Soestdijk in Baarn, dat meer dan 60 jaar lang de residentie was van toenmalig Koningin Juliana en Prins Bernard, tot aan hun dood in 2004. Zij waren de grootouders van Koning Willem-Alexander. Het paleis bestaat uit een centraal gedeelte met 2 vleugels en dateert uit de 17e eeuw.

We visited Soestdijk Palace in Baarn yesterday, the home for over six decades of the former Queen Juliana and her husband, Prince Bernhard, until their deaths in 2004. They were the grandparents of King Willem-Alexander. The palace consists of a central block and 2 wings, and dates from the 17th century.

I herinner me Paleis Soestdijk vooral van vroeger van het jaarlijkse defilé op 30 april, de verjaardag van Koningin Juliana. Een lange stoet mensen trok dan langs dit bordes waar de Koninklijke familie op stond. Het bordes was trouwens veel kleiner dan ik gedacht had, men stond vast dicht bij elkaar..

I remember Soestdijk Palace mostly from the past from the annual parade on April 30, the birthday of Queen Juliana. A huge procession walked by these steps on which the Royal Family was standing. By the way these steps were a lot smaller than I had imagined, they must have stood close together..

In 2006 werd het paleis opengesteld voor het publiek en doet het dienst als museum, in afwachting van een besluit over de definitieve bestemming van het gebouw.

In 2006 Soestdijk Palace was opened to the public and it is a museum now, pending a decision about its future use.
