Garden ornaments

We passed by the Garden Ornaments Farm in the village of Schoonloo yesterday afternoon and stepped in to have a look. And well, they obviously come in all sizes, shapes, and materials! I doubt the sphinx was for sale though..  ;)

.. but there were a lot of other -more manageable- things in the back garden.

Uffing

This bronze statue by Sofie Hupkens shows the Workum monk Uffing, who lived from the year 945 to 1025. As a young man Uffing was fascinated by the stories of the monks in the nearby St Odulphus Monastery. He then became a monk himself and learned to read and write. Thanks to Uffing the village of Workum can be traced back in writing to the 10th century.

Sofie Hupkens (1952) was born in São Paulo, Brazil, and lives in the province of Friesland, The Netherlands. The statue of Uffing stands on the market square in Workum.

Brabo Fountain

Silvius Brabo, here as a statue on top of the Brabo Fountain at the Grote Markt in Antwerp, is a mythical Roman soldier who is said to have killed a giant called Druon Antigoon. This giant terrorised the people of the city by asking money from them when they passed the bridge of the river Scheldt. When they didn´t want to or couldn´t pay, he cut off their hand and threw it in the river.
Brabo then cut off the hand of the giant, and the statue shows how he threw it into the river.

Later this story was also used to explain the name Antwerp, meaning Hand Werpen in Dutch or Hand Throwing in English.

Wemeltje Kruit

This statue honours Wemeltje Kruit (1887-1963), a lady who was widely known because she spent her life going door-to-door selling goods that she carried on her bicycle. Whenever she travelled to another village she appeared in the local church on Sunday morning, so people knew she would be coming that following week.
Wemeltje Kruit lived in Gasselte; first in a caravan and later in a small house near a campsite. After her death the house became a holiday-home. The statue at the Kerkstraat was created by Bert Kiewiet, and pictures her alongside her bicycle as many people knew here.

Statue of Lely

Cornelis Lely (1854-1929) was a Dutch civil engineer and statesman. He oversaw the passage of an act of parliament authorizing the construction of the Zuiderzee works. This huge project turned the Zuiderzee into a lake. A statue of Lely was placed halfway the Afsluitdijk. (see also yesterday's post).
And how about the dark sky! It started raining soon after I took this photo..
