Animal drawings

Drawings on the wall surrounding a skateboard area next to De Kwinne youth center in Stadskanaal.

The artist obviously likes animals :)    I'm linking to Sami's Colourful World.

3D street art 3

This is another 3D painting from Leeuwarden that I'd like to show you. Like the previous ones I posted on this blog earlier it was made by Dutch artist Leon Keer..

..and can be viewed from 2 sides. The Leeuwarden train station is in the background, as well as the mist fountain with the 2 heads I showed you recently.

3D street art 2

Following up on last Saturday's post, this is another 3D piece made by Leon Keer in the city of Leeuwarden. This one is on the Wilhelmina Square, in front of the Fries Museum. I like how the little girl appears to jump onto the pencil sharpener.

The 5 floor paintings by Keer in Leeuwarden are all in the context of M.C.Escher. Escher (1898-1972) was a Dutch graphic artist who explored infinity, reflection, symmetry and perspective and created impossible objects. If you are not familiar with his work, check the official Esher website HERE, it's truly amazing. The Fries Museum currently has an exhibition about Escher's life and his work.

3D street art 1

A nice 3D street art at the Sophialaan in Leeuwarden. The artist is Leon Keer (1948), who created 5 3D paintings that can be found on the way from the train station to the Fries Museum. Leeuwarden is cultural capital of 2018 and launched a number of creative projects; they are meant to show that 'anything is possible'.

And the same piece seen from the other side.

Us Mem mural

This mural at the Oostergoweg in Leeuwarden pictures the cow that in Frisian language is called 'Us Mem'. It is named after the perfect pedigree cow, which is a breed of dairy cattle that originated in the North Sea coast regions of northern Germany and the Netherlands. The mural also pictures the city's sustainable ambitions, like placing windmills for renewable energy.
.

The mural was painted by Klaas Lageweg in 2010. He is an artist from Groningen city, of whom a while ago I posted another large mural picturing a pigeon pulling a milk cart.

Wall decoration

I spotted this painted decoration on the facade of a house in Deventer, which seems to have had something to do with the electricity supply (?) in the past.

Anyway the owners made a nice creative wall decoration of it. I'm linking to Monday Mural.

Monday Mural

During a recent visit to the City of Leeuwarden I found this mural on an electricity box. It pictures the 'Onze Lieve Vrouwepoort' (The 'Our Lady Gate'), one of three old city gates that originally date from the 15th century.

The mural was an initiative made possible by a local Community Forum that takes care of the liveablity in the city centre.

Oslo giraffe mural

Arriving in Oslo to take the ferry to Denmark we had some time to look around in the harbour area, and found this beautiful guitar-playing giraffe.

Monday Mural

This is another mural we found on a wall next to a parking area in Lillehammer, Norway. It shows some scenes from the past. I googled for the name "Tårn Petter" ("Tower Petter"), which apparently is an alias for Petter Syversen (1845-1928) who was a thatcher. He was known for climbing on roofs with thorn clothes, bare feet and always without a rope. But he became a legend when he had to repair the roof of the church tower and he pulled breakneck stunts to get onto the tower.

Monday Mural

Back from our trip through beautiful Norway! We found this mural on a wall of a building in Lillehammer, picturing some of Norway's best: a stave church, mountains with forests, fjords, and agricultural history.

Wooden Shoes Museum

This is the colourful facade of the 'Internationaal Klompenmuseum' (International Wooden Shoes Museum) in de village of Eelde, that we passed during one of our recent hikes. According to their website their collection includes more than 2,200 pairs of different clogs and other footwear with wooden soles from 43 countries, and hundreds of tools from 7 European countries. We took this photo on a Sunday morning when the museum was (still) closed, so a visit will have to wait until another time.

ATM mural

In one of the side streets from the Diezerstraat in the city of Zwolle I spotted this mural of an ATM machine, looking quite real if you just pass it and see it from the corner of your eye. I had to look twice, can you believe it haha :) There even is a sign saying `Deze geldautomaat is tijdelijk buiten gebruik´ ('this machine is temporarily out of service').

Monday mural

A faded mural on an abandoned house near Lake Paterswolde. It was a real mess around the building, and I wonder if maybe squatters had occupied it.

.. and apparently the mural wasn't enough as some trees in front of the house were also painted on.

Tunnel mural

Apart from the nasty graffiti this mural shows quite some things that can be found in the Lappenvoort Polder that I told you about earlier: the White Mill, cows, ducks, and the green landscape with the Drentse Aa river. We found the mural in a small tunnel going underneath highway 28 near the village of Haren.

Wall advertising

I photographed this (newly repainted?) wall advertising in Apeldoorn:
"meubelfabrikanten (1901)
D.N. van Heerden
ontwerpen voor
woningsinrigtingen (1923)
Davoud (1972)
in English: "furniture makers (1901) - D.N. van Heerden - designs for home furnishings (1923) - Davoud (1972)

This address at the Hoofdstraat used to be the location for Davoud Perzische Tapijten (Davoud Persian Carpets) - hence the advertising on the wall. I haven't been able though to find any information regarding the name 'D.N. van Heerden' and/or the dates that are mentioned. Maybe they also had a store here once?

Apeldoorn mural

This mural at the Stationsstraat in Apeldoorn pictures several scenes: people cycling towards the horizon, and -as the city of Apeldoorn is located near the forest-rich Veluwe National Park- a variety of animals such as a deer, a wild boar, and a fox.

The mural was painted by local artist Stephan Peters. You can read more about him and his work HERE (in Dutch).

Football club mural

En route by train from Zwolle to Enschede I spotted a mural during a short stop at train station´Almelo De Riet´. Apparently it´s on a building that belongs to the local football club DRC 2012.

Zoomed in you can see it a little bit better.

Ghost sign

On the corner of the Diezerstraat and Hagelstraat in Zwolle is this ghost sign saying "Kent u onze Haagsche, Saksische en vitamine leverworst?", a Dutch advertisement meaning "Do you know our Hague, Saxon and vitamin liverwurst?". The lit. translation for our 'leverworst' would be 'liver sausage' though according to the web the word 'liverwurst' is used as an anglicization of the German 'Leberwurst'.
Are you still with me? ;)

Here in the Netherlands liverwurst is commonly eaten on sandwiches, or in slices as savoury bites. Apparently the Dutch city of The Hague and Saxony (a federal state of Germany) are known for their own types of liverwurst. And for the word 'vitamin' in the advertisement: liverwurst contains a lot of vitamin A.
The wall advertisement belonged to J.H.G. Alferink, who owned a butchery here from 1940.
