Mao suit

In the courtyard of the Rijksmuseum Twenthe in Enschede is this sculpture of a suit called ´Legacy Mantle´. It was the kind of uniform coat that Mao Zedong (1893-1976) used to wear in public, and in the West it eventually turned into an icon for the Maoist period and a symbol for Chinese communism in general.

It was made by Sui Jianguo (1956), a contemporary Chinese artist.

Museum entrance

The entrance of the Rijksmuseum Twenthe in Enschede, that was founded through the initiative of the Twenthe textile baron Jan Bernard van Heek, who wanted to have his painting collection housed in a new state museum in Enschede. In 1930 the museum was opened at the Lasondersingel.

Theater entrance

So I took the train to the city of Enschede yesterday to visit the Rijksmuseum Twenthe for their exhibition "In the heart of the Renaissance". Then there was time left for a short visit to the city centre, where I happened to pass 'De Kleine Willem' ('The Little William')- which is one of the locations of the Wilmink Theater.

Isn't this a nice scene above the entrance?

My cappuccino in... Enschede

at Bagels & Beans, last Saturday. It's close to the train station and such a friendly place!

Chequered floor

The Rijksmuseum Twenthe was founded through the initiative of the Twente textile baron Jan Bernard van Heek, who wanted to have his painting collection housed in a new state museum in Enschede. It is thanks to the persistence of his family after his death that the museum was actually built. It was opened in 1930.

The museum is known as "the museum of the imagination". In 36 rooms items from the present as well as from the past are displayed. There are no permanent exhibitions. Last Saturday was my first visit and I found it surprising and interesting. I will definitely go back!

Like a mask on the wall

This portrait of Georges Simenon by Dutch painter and sculptor Emo Verkerk (1955) was described to be just as minimalistic as effective. It's made of oil paint on copper and wood, and hanging on the wall in the Rijksmuseum Twenthe in Enschede.

Take a few seconds to watch it. Intriguing, isn't it?

Coloured window

View across the patio of the Rijksmuseum Twenthe. I like the effect of the old-fashioned and thick coloured glass window.

Enjoy your Sunday! :)

Playing children

Two sculptures of playing children (there was no title), made from leather and synthetic material, created by Sabi van Hemert (1967)

They are part of the current exhibition of the Rijksmuseum Twenthe in Enschede, that I visited today.

'love bench'

This eye catching bench/sculpture in the city centre of Enschede was created by Guusje Beverdam. She is a Dutch sculptor specialised in ceramic art for indoor and outdoor 'use'. Isn't it beautiful!

coffee-bike

Don't wait for your customers to come to you, but go to your customers: that's the concept for these 'coffee-bikes' from the Mobile Coffee Company. I saw it on the weekly market in the city of Enschede yesterday.

From what I found on the web it is apparently a German concept, and the fully equipped bikes can be found in various European cities like Bukarest, Munich, Berlin, Prague, and Bordeaux.
