Glass

An exhibition of colourful glass in Museum Het Valkhof in Nijmegen. In the background you can see just a glimpse of the Waalbrug, an arch bridge over the Waal River.

The 'gaper'

Another image of a 'gaper', or 'someone who yawns', above the entrance of a (former) chemist. By seeing this head people knew where to go if they needed a medicine to cure a cold, etc. I have posted them before on this blog, they are a sign from the past and a tradition I like to see.
Photo taken in the city of Nijmegen.

Moenen

A few of you mentioned the sculpture on the photo from the Sint-Stevenskerk in Nijmegen that I posted last Friday. It's not an angel or a gargoyle, but it pictures the devil "Moenen" from the story Mariken van Nieuwmeghen, a late medieval Dutch text from the early 16th century. Moenen seduces Mariken to travel to Antwerp with him, where they stay together for 7 years and lead a wild and lawless life. When Mariken comes to her senses, Moenen tries to kill her but he doesn't succeed. Eventually Mariken's sins are forgiven.

The stone sculpture was made by sculpturor Piet Killaars in 1968. Note that Moenen is sitting with his back to the church!

In an alley

This Summer I visited Nijmegen, and made these photos in an alley with steps that lead to the 13th century Sint-Stevenskerk. It is the largest church in the city and built on a small hill named the Hundisburg.

In the alley I spotted this cat (with a head like a skunk?) painted on the wall left of the steps. On a previous visit I photographed a mural of an orange cat on the same wall, to see it click HERE.

Faces from the past

Museum Het Valkhof in Nijmegen has it's focus on art and archeology. I showed an example of art in yesterday's post, today 2 photos of historical objects. This large clay pot, found near Nijmegen has 3 (similar) faces. Pots like these were used during ritual ceremonies.

This is a reconstructed iron 'facial helmet' from the 1st century. The mask was once covered with a thin layer of silver. The three holes in the cheek represent a tattoo. Very remarkable is the clothing with a plaiting made of horsehair. The facial helmet that you see in the background contains some original parts; it was found in 1991, also near Nijmegen, on the spot where a Roman army base was located between 40 and 70 AD.

The soft chair

This remarkable chair is a piece of art named ´Mother´s Invention´, and is one of the 'Horti sculptures' by Ferdi Tajiri-Jansen (1927-1969). It belongs to the collection of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, but can now be seen as part of the exhibition ´Pop Art´ in Museum De Valkhof in Nijmegen.

Ferdi started to create Horti sculptures in 1966. On a trip through Mexico she became fascinated by the boundless vitality and the amazing wealth of colour of the nature there. The Horti sculptures radiate the spirit of the sixties: psychedelic, playful, colourful, flower power. This sculpture depicts the domain of motherhood: a place of refuge, a place of rest, and a throne for the Alma Mater. (Latin alma "nourishing/kind, mater "mother")

fountain pen

At the facade of Grote Markt 42 in Nijmegen, at the corner of the Grote Straat, hangs a giant fountain pen. This is a legacy of the former office bookstore Theo Biessels, that was located here from 1924 until 1990. When the store closed, the fountain pen stayed in it's place.

The café that is located here nowadays kept the same name as the bookstore.

Q is for Quay

On the quay at the river Waal in Nijmegen, the round yellow maritime bollards have been transformed to three dimensional smileys. I like them!

steel drawing

This nameless sculpture somewhat resembles a "drawing" of blue painted steel. It's location is the Kelfkensbos in Nijmegen, close to museum Het Valkhof.

The creator is the Belgian sculptor Narcisse Tordoir, who lives and works in Antwerp.
