After the storm

There was a strong gale earlier this week, the first storm of this Autumn with force 9 at the North Sea coast in the north of our country. After the worst was over, this path in Bad Nieuweschans seemed to have a carpet of leaves.

De Oude Remise

The renovated building that you see here is known as 'De Oude Remise' ('The Old Roundhouse'). It was once in use by the National Railway for servicing locomotives here in this town Bad Nieuweschans. The building dates from 1877 and had enough room inside for 12 locomotives.
From 1948 until 1980 the local bus company used it as their garage. Nowadays it's officially a heritage site and is home to a grand café, a tourist and archeological information site, and the (see and do) Lego Museum Bricks Art.

Main Guard House

Centraal aan de Voorstraat in Bad Nieuweschans ligt de 'Hoofdwacht', een rijksmonument uit 1631. Tot in de 19e eeuw was het gebouw in de voormalige vesting in gebruik als hoofdwachtlokaal. Elk uur werd hier de wacht ceremonieel gewisseld.

The 'Hoofdwacht' (Main Guard House) is located centrally at the Voorstraat in Bad Nieuweschans, and is a historically important heritage site dating from 1631. Until the 19th century it served as headquarters for the guards in the former fortress. Each hour the ceremonial change of guards took place here.

Waaiboei

De "Waaiboei" is een bijna 8 meter hoge tuimelaar die op de dijk staat bij Nieuwe Statenzijl, aan de Dollard in het noordoosten van Groningen.

The "Waaiboei" (literally 'blow buoy') is a nearly 8 meters (about 26 ft) high rocker standing on the dike in Nieuwe Statenzijl, at the Dollard in the north east of Groningen. 

De met beton verzwaarde, bolvormige onderkant, staat los en beweegt met de windkracht en windrichting mee. Het kunstwerk is gemaakt door kunstenaar Martin Borchert.

The round shaped bottom is made heavy with concrete and stands detached, so it can move with the wind force and direction of the wind. This piece of art was created by sculptor Martin Borchert.

Dit is een foto uit 2008 toen wij hier waren tijdens een flinke storm. Ik leun achterover 'in' de wind, terwijl de waaiboei voorover geblazen wordt.

This is a photo made in 2008 when we were here during a heavy storm. You can see me leaning backwards in the wind, while the buoy is blown forward.

Zimmer Frei

Dit uithangbord zou in Duitsland niet bijzonder opvallen, ware het niet dat deze foto in Bad Nieuweschans in Nederland is gemaakt. Dit grensplaatsje is duidelijk op bezoekers uit Duitsland gericht..

This sign ('Zimmer Frei' is German for 'Room Available') probably wouldn't attract as much attention in Germany as it does here, in Bad Nieuweschans in the Netherlands. This town near the border is obviously orientating on visitors from Germany..

KM -1

Ik was verbaasd om aan het begin van de dijk bij Nieuwe Statenzijl dit paaltje met KM-1 te zien. Min 1 km? Ik zocht thuis op internet en vond dat dit blijkbaar een 'foutje' is geweest van Rijkswaterstaat. Tijdens het uitmeten van de palen had men een kilometer voor de grens de paal 0 in de grond geslagen. De grens van Duitsland met Nederland begint hierdoor met -1 in plaats van 0...

I was surprised to see this KM-1 marking on the edge of the dike near Nieuwe Statenzijl. Minus 1 km? Back home I looked it up on the net and found this apparently was caused by a 'small mistake' by Rijkswaterstaat (an agency part of the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment). When measuring the distances, the 0 marking was placed a kilometer (1 km equals 0,6 miles) away from the border. So the actual border between Germany and our country starts with -1 instead of 0...

N is for National Geographic window project

Een tijdje terug vertelde ik al eens over het project dat de regio Oost-Groningen en National Geographic in 2010 startten om deze regio in noord Nederland onder de aandacht te brengen. Het felgele logo van National Geographic is daarbij bedoeld als een venster, dat 'het mooiste uit Groningen omlijst'.

   

A while ago I told you about the project that the region East Groningen and National Geographic started to attract attention to this region in the north of the Netherlands. The bright yellow National Geographic logo is used here as a window, to 'frame the most beautiful spots in Groningen'.

Ook Nieuwe Statenzijl is onderdeel van dit project. Door het raam zie je trouwens in de verte de Kiekkaaste, de vogelkijkhut die ik je een paar dagen geleden liet zien..

Also taking part in this project is Nieuwe Statenzijl. Note that you can see the Kiekkaaste in the distance, the bird observation post that I showed you a few days ago..

Kiekkaaste

De 'Kiekkaaste' met zicht op het water van de Dollard is de enige buitendijkse vogelkijkhut van Nederland. Door de aanleg van een planken pad is deze nu makkelijk (en bijna altijd droog) bereikbaar.

The 'Kiekkaaste' with a view on the water of the Dollard is the only bird observation post in the Netherlands that is situated outside the dikes. It is easy (and nearly almost dry) accessible now after the construction of this wooden path.

Dit prachtige stukje Groningse natuur vind je aan de rand van Nederland in Nieuwe Statenzijl, vlak aan de grens met Duitsland.

This beautiful piece of Groningen nature is right at the edge of the Netherlands in Nieuwe Statenzijl, near the German border.

Het woord Kiekkaaste is Gronings voor (letterlijk) 'kijkkast', wat kan staan voor 'etalage' of 'televisie'. Morgen een paar foto's vanuit de uitkijkhut..

The word Kiekkaaste is Groningen dialect for (literally) 'watch cabinet', meaning 'show case' or 'television'. Tomorrow I will show you some of the photo's we took from inside the observation post..

Green Coastal Road

Ik had deze bordjes al vaker gezien maar wist eigenlijk nooit exact wat ze betekenden. Dus: de Groene Kustweg is een 1.250 km lange autoroute langs de kusten van Nederland, Duitsland en Denemarken. Het idee voor deze weg ontstond in de jaren 1950, met de bedoeling het toeristenverkeer na WO2 te stimuleren. Kaarten en boekjes vertellen over de bezienswaardigheden onderweg. Bad Nieuweschans is één van de dorpen langs de route die de moeite waard zijn om te bezoeken.

I had seen these signs before but never knew exactly what they meant. So: the Green Coastal Road ('Groene Kustweg' in Dutch) is a 1,250 km long car route along the coasts of the Netherlands, Germany and Denmark. The idea for this route originates from the years 1950, hoping that it would stimulate tourism after WW2. Maps and books tell you all about the sights. Bad Nieuweschans is one of the towns worth while visting along the way.

Spring is in the air

Ja, er was geduld voor nodig, maar de lente zit definitief in de lucht. Deze beide fietsers genieten van de zon, en de luwte van de dijk waarvandaan ik deze foto genomen heb.   -bij Nieuwe Statenzijl, in het hoge noordoosten van Nederland.

Yes, it took a long time but Spring is defenitely in the air. These cyclists enjoy the sun, and the shelter of the dike on which I stood taking this picture.    -near Nieuwe Statenzijl in the very northeast of the Netherlands.
