Foggy day

Fine conditions for a hike or (as for the gentleman coming towards us) a bicycle ride and get some fresh air! Photo taken earlier today on a quiet country road just outside the village of Borger.

Rusty bike

You might think this bicycle doesn't have a caring owner, though as it was parked in 'museum village' Orvelte it is likely that the bicycle isn't meant anymore for daily use.

Bicycle shed sign

This monumental building at Brink no 16 in Deventer is nowadays used by an organisation called "KunstaanZ", who organises exhibitions with contemporary art.

A large and colourful sign above the entrance catches the eye though; on which a gentleman and his bicycle tell that this was once the location for a 'Rijwielstalling' - which in formal Dutch means 'bicycle shed'.

I'm linking to signs, signs.

An old bicycle

Isn't this the perfect way to make use of an old bicycle?

Seen in the town of Keuruu. Happy Saturday!

Canal bridge

View on the Beekstraat, that runs on both sides of this narrow canal in Elburg. The streets were deserted on the Sunday morning hour we were there; most likely the Elburg inhabitants were attending a church service as they are known to be very devout. And I guess 10 am is a bit early for most day visitors - just some early birds like us ;)

National Park bicycles

As mentioned before on this blog after an earlier visit to the Hoge Veluwe National Park: it has a large number of 'white bicycles' that are free to use for all visitors. There are large parkings at each of the 3 entrance gates, as well as near the visitor centre and museum in the heart of the park.

It's a great service for visitors. There were still a lot here when this photo was taken last Friday at the Hoenderloo entrance, but during holiday seasons most (or maybe even all) of the bicycles can be found somewhere on the many bicycle paths in the 55 km2 large park.

Tour of Drenthe

The Tour of Drenthe (Ronde van Drenthe in Dutch) is an elite men's and women's professional road bicycle event held each year in the province of Drenthe. We saw the men this morning, halfway the villages of Odoorn and Exloo, speeding over a cobbled road.

The Tour of Drenthe has been held since 1960, and was won by a non-Dutchman 7 times. Only in 2001 the race was cancelled due to foot-and-mouth disease.

And when the bikes were gone, lots and lots of support cars followed..
