FIrst snow of the season

The Westerdiep at the edge of the village of Nieuw Buinen, earlier today.

Buinen-Schoonoord canal

One more photo taken along the Buinen-Schoonoord canal, with on the left the path we took. There was still some ice on the water last Sunday.

Scrap

The Buinen-Schoonoord canal was being dredged and cleared of things that don't belong in the water.

Icicles

We saw some impressive icicles yesterday when we passed this lock in the Buinen-Schoonoord canal near Borger. I don't know if the water was all frozen last week, it was running fast again when we were there.

They were formed in a rib-like shape. A remarkable view.

On the ice

From today temperatures will rise above freezing point, and this will stay the same the coming week, so anybody who wants to skate this Winter, it's pretty much now or never. 

These photos were taken at the ice rink in Borger around noon today.

Cold morning

Lots of sun today after a cold start this morning. Photo taken around 10:30 am when the grasses in the shade were still frozen white.

We had some snow this morning -I took this photo earlier today. And according to the weather forecast it is going to get really cold next week. Happy weekend!

We had a little bit of snow this morning.

Sun and shadow

I'm not sure if this piece of land in the Westerwolde region is overflowed or if there is (some) water here all year. By the look of the vegetation it might be a wet spot. Anyway there was a thin layer of ice at the front that wasn't reached by the sun.

Ice skating rink

The Christmas Fair included a small ice skating rink.

Kids enjoyed themselves on the ice while their parents sat for something to drink or eat.

Lonely

It's hard to see on this photo, but there is actually a narrow country road on which this car is driving.

Snow trail

The snow reveals that an animal passed here on its way towards the end of our garden. A cat maybe?

Orvelte winter fair

Two images from the winter fair from last weekend in the village of Orvelte. We were there before the crowds came and had a good chance to look around.

Lots of handmade things to choose from.

Pigsqueak

We had just enough snow earlier this week to cover the garden with a tiny white layer..
This plant, called schoenlappersplant in Dutch and Bergenia in English is aka "elephant's ears" -due to the shape of the leaves, and aka "pigsqueak" -due to the sound produced when 2 leaves are rubbed together... haha I will definitely have to try that! :)

Molenveld

View across the 'Molenveld' heather fields near the village of Exloo. Whenever it's really cold or a bit rainy, and the idea of going out isn't all that attractive but we still want some fresh air, we like to walk the path surrounding this open area, which takes about an hour in total.
