From the archives #65

(Yorkshire, U.K. - 2014)
After a pause of almost a year I am continuing with my "From the archives"-series today, with a photo from August 2014 taken at the Newgate Market in York (UK). This daily open market is also known as the Shambles Market. Wherever we are, I always enjoy strolling around on a local market, how about you?

Have a wonderful weekend!

The Bloody Tour

This small sign in the centre of York invites people to join The Bloody Tour, and learn about the true horrors of the city such as executions and the plaque. Well, how about that?
We didn't take the tour in the short time that we were there in August last year, but it would have been interesting to join and hear 'the dark side' of 2,000 years of history of this beautiful city in Yorkshire. So, maybe another time!
And you, would you like to do The Bloody Tour?

The Habit

´The Habit´ in the old city-centre of York is, as they say a `cute and cosy café-bar with a bit of an olde worlde feel and delightfully ramshackle furniture'. Word is that the building used to be an outlier of the Minster, putting up travelling monks...

We made this photo in the Summer of 2014 in the U.K.

Punch Bowl

For today's sign I chose this photo from the city of York, made during our visit last August. The Punch Bowl is a traditional English pub, serving a range of real ales and pub food.

From their site: "Said to be haunted, The Punch Bowl has been a pub for over four centuries. We have a historical connection with the Whig Party from the 17th century. Punch was the preferred drink of the Whigs, whilst the Tories likes their claret. Any pub displaying a punch bowl sign was therefore declaring its political allegiance."

31 december 2014

On this last day..

..of 2014 I chose a photo that we made during our Summer holiday in the U.K., of a (in my opinion) typically British shop window in Hawes, a village in the Wensleydale in Yorkshire.

I wish you a wonderful and memorable 31st of December, wherever you are!

BUS STOP

A sign almost as big as a bus! ;)  Seen in the village of Richmond, Yorkshire, last Summer.

Golden Fleece

Back to our Summer holiday in the U.K. once more with a photo we took in York. According to their site, The Golden Fleece is York´s most hunted pub, thus one of England´s most haunted sites, AND the oldest inn in the centre of York!

Another interesting fact that I found when I googled on ´Golden Fleece´was that in Greek mythology, the Golden Fleece is that of the gold-hair winged ram, and the fleece is a symbol of authority and kingship. However this is just one of many interpretations and myths..

Honesty box

Picture yourself on your way towards the Aysgarth falls in Yorkshire, or different falls in another place in the world.. Just before you arrive you see this 'Access Fee Honesty Box'. There´s nobody around. What would you do?

Brighten up your bicycle

There's so much more to do with a bicycle than "just" cycling! We found this window display in York.

Lost and Found

The Station of Richmond, North Yorkshire, is ´a place permeated with stories and memories of departures and arrivals, travelling and homecoming´, as their website says. Once a train station, it has now a temporary café bar and restaurant, vintage lifestyle store, cinema, food shops, and an art gallery. So lots of things to do and see there. We enjoyed looking around, as it had a very friendly atmosphere. In one corner of the building (on the left side of the photo) was a small room with this LOST & FOUND -sign:

That isn't me!

..the man assured me when I took this photo, pointing at the caricature on the sheet. And indeed it was somebody on the photo who got himself drawn. Maybe as a present?
Seen in the city of York, last month.

Remembering Le Tour

As you may remember, this year´s edition of the Tour de France started in the U.K. On the first stage from Leeds to Harrogate, the cyclists passed the Yorkshire Dales National Park. And when we were there in August, the villages along the route were still proud to show it with bicycles on the walls of pubs, hotels, shops, etc. These pictures are from Hawes, a town in the Wensleydale.

Black Sheep Brewery

We brought home (or actually my husband did as I don't like to drink beer), a souvenir from the Black Sheep Brewery in Masham, Yorkshire. However I do like the reference there to All Creatures Great & Small with 'All Creatures Bright & Beautiful'! And what about the one on the right, with 'Monty Python's Holy (Gr)ail, Tempered over burning witches..'

Wickedly wonderful..

One of the many, many displays of fudge that we came across during our holiday.. It's sweet, soft and rich, and far too delicious..  I searched for a translation in Dutch, but I'm not sure there is one. Maybe 'toffee' comes closest. Best is to try it :)
