Along the city canal

Arriving in the centre of Zwolle by a nice path along the 'Stadsgracht' (City Canal). And turning right..

..onto a bridge called 'Nieuwe Havenbrug'. Note that it is still decorated with colourful flowers on the lamp posts, even though we're pretty far in October!

Sculpture reflection

Zooming into the bottom part of a large and shiny sculpture in front of the Fundatie Museum in Zwolle, that I visited earlier today. On the left you can see the reflection of the columns at the museum entrance.

Watching

A photo from one of our walks this Summer in the Westerwolde region. The group carefully watched us passing by. I'm sure they were happy to be in the shade that day!

Beavers' work #2

A bit further on our hike in Isojärvi Nat. Park than yesterday's post, we passed a small lake called Lepolampi and saw this sign:

..that indicated a detour was necessary..

..because a small part of the forest was flooded due to beavers! It must have been a while since, as many of the trees standing in the water were already dead.

Ducks

While eating an ice-cream and sitting on a bench, a couple of ducks decided to come round and see if anything tasty would come their way.

One duck even jumped over the white line that was (I think) put there to keep them in the water, onto the stone quay. But ice-cream is not meant as duck-food, and our sandwiches were long gone. Sorry!

Zandeweer

Photo taken last Sunday during our hike when we passed through the small and charming village of Zandeweer, in the Hogeland region of the province of Groningen. The mill in the background is called "Windlust" and is a corn mill from 1818.

Diepe Dolte

This water in Workum is named Diepe Dolte. The boat was probably on its way to the nearby IJssel Lake. It was a perfect day voor sailing!

Marsh

We are standing here at the edge of the Lunsveen, a marsh in the woodlands near Borger. A wonderful spot, and very quiet when we passed it earlier today. Once this water was used as an ice rink in Winter.

The Yellow Bridge

This Yellow Bridge called "Gele Klap" is a vertical-lift bridge in Stadskanaal. The name Klap refers to the Dutch word 'klapbrug' or 'drawbridge', after the old wooden drawbridge that was here before 1867.

Walk or swim?

Believe it or not but the water on the right was the path we were supposed to follow! Due to all the rain of the past weeks the stream on the left overflowed. This was just outside the village of Sellingen.

Hoornsedijk

There were some rainy moments during our hike. These photos were taken near Hoornsedijk, a hamlet south of Groningen city..

..and close to Lake Paterswolde where yesterday's photo was taken.

De Vlijt mill

Today's photos were taken from the Steamboat Quay in Meppel  -the boat you see on the right is (yes, once more :) ) the pancake ship. The mill in the background is called "De Vlijt" ("The Dilligence" in English), a smock mill in Meppel. It was rebuilt in 2002 on the octagonal brick base of a tower mill from 1859 that had been taken out of use in 1933.

In Dutch we call this type of mill a 'achtkante stellingmolen'. While googling for some more information I read that the base of the mill is used as living accomodation and office space, so it's not open to the public. The official De Vlijt website (in Dutch) can be found HERE.

Meppel canals

I visited Meppel today, a small city in the south-west of the Province of Drenthe. Meppel developed in the 16th century as a transport and distribution inland harbour. Nowadays there is only one main canal left. I took this photo on my way from the train station to the centre, at the point where the canal is divided in two.

Furniture maker

Always on the look out for special signs I found this one saying 'meubels op maat' ('custom-made furniture') in the Walstraat in Deventer.

The owner, Mr Frank Dewever, was an educated chemist, though at some point switched to his real passion: the trade of designing furniture.
