Rusty bike

You might think this bicycle doesn't have a caring owner, though as it was parked in 'museum village' Orvelte it is likely that the bicycle isn't meant anymore for daily use.

Smeerling #2

Another view, now showing the side of restaurant 'Gasterij Natuurlijk Smeerling'. They serve local and organic food during day hours. An example is 'poffert', about which I posted back in 2015 (click HERE if you'd like to read more)

Smeerling #1

Restaurant 'Gasterij Natuurlijk Smeerling' is located in a former -and completely renovated- farm house and barn, in the heart of the Westerwolde region. The entrance is around the corner here.

A closer look at the weathered roof tiles.

I'm linking to Tom's Barn Collective.

Door and decoration

This wonderful piece was above a entrance door.

According to the house numbers, quite a lot of different people live behind this door..   It must nice and light in the entrance hall with those windows, don't you think?

Door

The old city of Deventer is filled with treasures like this. Wouldn't it be something to arrive at your front door..

..and 2 mocking faces watch you while you search for your key?  ;)

Keuruu railway station

There, at the left side of the door, is the railway clock that I showed you yesterday. We were in the town of Keuruu, located about 60 km from Jyväskylä in central Finland, to visit the Keuruu Old Church -more about that later.

'Rautatieasema' means 'railway station'. The building had so many elegant and fine details around the windows.

And the other side.

Nicolas Church inside

Following up on yesterday's post I have 2 photos that were taken inside the Nicolas Church in Oldenzijl. This is the view in the direction of the choir. The pulpit on the right side dates from 1768 and is in Rococo style.

I found this small window in a side wall. It's a so-called quatrefoil (vierpas in Dutch), a decorative element consisting of a symmetrical shape which forms the overall outline of four partially overlapping circles of the same diameter. It is found in art, architecture, heraldry, and traditional Christian symbolism. The word quatrefoil means 'four leaves', referring specifically to a four-leaved clover, but applies in general to four-lobed shapes in various contexts. (from Wikipedia)

Another interesting detail from the Dutch Wikipedia site about the church is that they say that this quatrefoil probably served as a 'hagioscope' or 'squint', an architectural term for a small opening or tunnel at seated eye-level through the wall of a church, that enables a view for one or more worshippers in side-chapels, chantry chapels, or other parts of the church from which the high altar was not visible.
If you're interested check the link for hagioscope for more facts.

Doors and decorations

I always enjoy photographing doors and/or windows. Have a look at the decorations on and around the entrance here at no. 71..

..and here at no.1d.
Both photos were taken in the city of Wernigerode, Harz (Germany)

Of course you can take the elevator, but why not take the stairs. Photo taken at the Fundatie Museum in Zwolle.

De Wetering

"De Wetering", as this building at the Church Square in Meppel is called, was built in 1921 as a transformer station, to transport electricity from the power station to the end users. Not what I would have expected at first sight, it must have had a thorough restoration.

Designed in Renaissance Revival style the building nowadays serves as a centre of the Dutch Reformed church. It is listed as a National Heritage building.

Wall decoration

I spotted this painted decoration on the facade of a house in Deventer, which seems to have had something to do with the electricity supply (?) in the past.

Anyway the owners made a nice creative wall decoration of it. I'm linking to Monday Mural.

Furniture maker

Always on the look out for special signs I found this one saying 'meubels op maat' ('custom-made furniture') in the Walstraat in Deventer.

The owner, Mr Frank Dewever, was an educated chemist, though at some point switched to his real passion: the trade of designing furniture.

I'm linking to signs, signs.
