Vulcanic grill

Lanzarote restaurant 'El Diablo' was built next to a vulcano and is located in the heart of Timanfaya National Park. With a large grill put over a vulcanic opening, they use heat coming directly from the earth. When we were there, potatoes and chicken were being prepared.
The most recent vulcanic eruption on the island took place in 1824.

Fresh milk

During one of our hikes recently we passed a dairy farm along the Oranjekanaal in Zuidveld, near Orvelte. The sign saying 'melktap' ('milk pump') caught our attention..

.. so we had a closer look and discovered a 24/7 self-service organic milk device..

..and even a place to sit and rest. Isn't that nice? We went along without taking a bottle of milk in our rucksack, but I'm sure many passers-by do so.

Picking pears

October is the month for picking pears from the tree in our garden. They are what we know as 'stoofperen': culinary or cooking pears. It is a Dutch cultivar named 'Gieser Wildeman'. As they are dry and hard, we only eat them after several hours of cooking in water, with a cinnamon stick, lemon peel, some sugar and some red wine added. They come as a side dish at dinner. Delicious!

Onions

During our hike last Sunday that we started from the village of Schoonoord we passed this field with... yes, onions! They were all lying on top, waiting to be collected.

Still red

Still lots of unripe blackberries here, photo taken during our hike last Sunday. It might be the second time this season however that blackberries grow - thinking of the long warm Summer we've had.

Market Hall

Besides a market at the open square, Oulu has a historic market hall that was opened in 1901. The city councel of Oulu decided to build an indoor market due to tightened food safety regulations. Specifically butchers had to move to the covered market.

Spread over 2 aisles are 62 wooden shop stalls that sell everything from food (meat/fish/bread etc.). clothes, handicrafts, and more.

Fruit market

We're back from 2 weeks travelling through beautiful -and tropical- Finland. This photo was taken at the market in Oulu, at which mainly fresh fruit was sold like strawberries and raspberries.

Walnuts for sale

Walnuts for sale in front of a house last Sunday in Deurze, near Assen. We bought a bag (15 for eur 1,50) and they tasted very well!

Bakery

This beautiful building in Art Nouveau style is a bakery and confectioner's shop in Kampen.

Baking bread

On Boxing Day at the Veenpark open-air museum these men were baking bread the traditional way. In the old days, instead of inside a farm kitchen the ovens in which bread was baked were outside in a separate building. They were mostly very basic and built of bricks, with a small half round masonry oven.

We bought a freshly-baked raisin bread to take home. Delicious with some butter!

Chapeaux!

One of the things we enjoyed during our visit to Het Loo Palace was the temporary exhibition 'Chapeaux! Hats of Queen Beatrix'. She was our queen for 33 years -from 1980 to 2013- and she always wore a hat at special occasions like state visits, receptions, openings and ceremonies. It wasn't allowed to photograph at the exhibition so I can't show anything, but some of the hats that were exhibited can be viewed on the palace's website HERE.

The red hat on the photo is a delicious piece of pastry that we treated ourselves to after a walk in the palace park, together with a cappuccino. Doesn't it have a royal look?  :))

Cheese and more

This shop located at the Kleine Kerkstraat in the city of Leeuwarden specialises in cheese, nuts, olives, home made salads and much more. The ´cheese-bicycle' on my header photo is part of their advertising. It was right behind me from where I took this photo.

At the market

The fresh-product market held at the Vismarkt, one of the larger squares in the city of Groningen.

Ghost sign

On the corner of the Diezerstraat and Hagelstraat in Zwolle is this ghost sign saying "Kent u onze Haagsche, Saksische en vitamine leverworst?", a Dutch advertisement meaning "Do you know our Hague, Saxon and vitamin liverwurst?". The lit. translation for our 'leverworst' would be 'liver sausage' though according to the web the word 'liverwurst' is used as an anglicization of the German 'Leberwurst'.

Here in the Netherlands liverwurst is commonly eaten on sandwiches, or in slices as savoury bites. Apparently the Dutch city of The Hague and Saxony (a federal state of Germany) are known for their own types of liverwurst. And for the word 'vitamin' in the advertisement: liverwurst contains a lot of vitamin A.

The wall advertisement belonged to J.H.G. Alferink, who owned a butchery here from 1940.

My cappuccino in ... Emmen

Enjoying a cappuccino at "Chez Nous" in Emmen.

The restaurant has a modern interior with lots of wood. They are located at the Noorderplein, next to the library.

Healthy??

The owner of this fish and chips stand in the city of Bruges was advertising in a way that caught attention; "Gezondheidsapotheek" literally means "health pharmacy".
