Wall advertising

I photographed this (newly repainted?) wall advertising in Apeldoorn:
"meubelfabrikanten (1901)
D.N. van Heerden
ontwerpen voor
woningsinrigtingen (1923)
Davoud (1972)
in English: "furniture makers (1901) - D.N. van Heerden - designs for home furnishings (1923) - Davoud (1972)

This address at the Hoofdstraat used to be the location for Davoud Perzische Tapijten (Davoud Persian Carpets) - hence the advertising on the wall. I haven't been able though to find any information regarding the name 'D.N. van Heerden' and/or the dates that are mentioned. Maybe they also had a store here once?

Ghost sign

On the corner of the Diezerstraat and Hagelstraat in Zwolle is this ghost sign saying "Kent u onze Haagsche, Saksische en vitamine leverworst?", a Dutch advertisement meaning "Do you know our Hague, Saxon and vitamin liverwurst?". The lit. translation for our 'leverworst' would be 'liver sausage' though according to the web the word 'liverwurst' is used as an anglicization of the German 'Leberwurst'.
Are you still with me? ;)

Here in the Netherlands liverwurst is commonly eaten on sandwiches, or in slices as savoury bites. Apparently the Dutch city of The Hague and Saxony (a federal state of Germany) are known for their own types of liverwurst. And for the word 'vitamin' in the advertisement: liverwurst contains a lot of vitamin A.
The wall advertisement belonged to J.H.G. Alferink, who owned a butchery here from 1940.

Wall advertising

For dozens of years there was an empty frame on a wall along the Papenstraat in Zwolle. Then, on request of the owner of the building, the inside of the frame was examined and old text was discovered underneath several layers of paint. After 150 hours of carefully scraping away paint, 5 different historical wall advertisements were found dating from the period 1890-1955: from a shoemaker, two from a bicycle dealer, and two from a furniture maker.

Two sheets of paper underneath the frame explain what can be seen here. Nice fact is that the cleaning project was named "Project Toverbal" ("The Gobstopper Project"), as -like the candy reveals different colours- each layer dissolves a different item.
For a few more photos from the project go to their website HERE.

Healthy??

The owner of this fish and chips stand in the city of Bruges was advertising in a way that caught attention; "Gezondheidsapotheek" literally means "health pharmacy".

Christmas shop windows

I love to see the creativity of shop owners in this time of year. These are 2 photos from shop windows in Bruges taken at the end of November. Here a display of Santas..

..and here, a bit of reflection included :), a snowman about to collapse as he is being torched by some happy though hungry creatures!    And all are made of chocolate..

Have fun this Saturday!

Train travel and reading

"Lekker lezen doe je in de trein" ("Comfortably reading in the train") is a campaign of the Dutch Railways (NS) with which they hope to encourage and inspire travelers to read in the train. Train travel and reading just go hand-in-hand, they say, and I think that's very true! They are also known to support a number of important and well-known Dutch reading and literacy campaigns.
This was the train that took us from The Hague to Zwolle, Saturday a few weeks ago.

Near the doors of the train part of a page of several books were displayed, like here from Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert.
I´m not sure though if this would be the book I´d choose to read in the train, a thriller or detective is more my thing..  How about you?

Coffee, money and happiness

Restaurant owners need to be creative these days if they want to attract customers..

The first photo was taken in Stockholm last month, the other one was taken in (a wet!) Groningen yesterday.

Old wall advertising

On several locations the city of Kampen has placed back old and restored wall advertisements from former retailers. On the corner of the Geerstraat and Bovennieuwstraat 2 examples can be found. The one on top is from a bakery run by the Siemerink family until 1938. The sign says:
"W. Siemerink. Brood, Banket. Kandij en Ontbijtkoek. Oudst adres voor Kamperkoekjes"
("W. Siemerink. Bread, Pastry, Rock Candy and Gingerbread. The oldest address for Kamper Cookies")

The sign below is from De Korenschoof, a bakery specialised in several kinds of typical Dutch bread and cookies, all first quality. The owners were Mr Stoffer and his wife, who run the bakery in Kampen until 1978.

Happy Weekend! :)

Ghost mural

A fading ghost mural saying "C.V. Woninginrichting P.P.W. Randoe" and "Randoe is stijl" on a wall at the Gierstraat in Haarlem. Searching for more information I found several old newspaper clippings from the 1940s and 1950s that contained adds by Randoe, who was a home furnisher.
"C.V." stands for "Commanditaire Vennootschap" (Limited partnership business entity) I think?

Gejut

This parked bicycle in the village of Egmond aan Zee advertises with a sign that says 'GEJUT' (Dutch for 'combed from the beach') and 'Geschäft', which is the German word for 'shop'. GEJUT sells all kinds of things made from pieces of wood, rope, plastic etc. found on the beach, bringing each visitor -as they say- in closer contact to the sea.

Many signs in villages along the North Sea coast are bilingual by the way, responding to the many tourists that come here from Germany.
