View on the Groninger Museum
As soon as you leave Groningen Central Station there is this view on the colourful buildings of the Groninger Museum.
The museum consists of 3 main pavillions, all modernist structures. The eye-catching yellow tower was designed by Alessandro Mendini, an Italian architect.

Deventer city hall
The facade of the Deventer city hall, seen here from the courtyard, shows 2,264 unique finger prints of 2,264 inhabitants of Deventer. Moulded in aluminium they form an eye catching wall.
It makes a unique view I think, and it's a nice idea to express the city's engagement to its citizens.

Keuruu railway station
There, at the left side of the door, is the railway clock that I showed you yesterday. We were in the town of Keuruu, located about 60 km from Jyväskylä in central Finland, to visit the Keuruu Old Church -more about that later.
'Rautatieasema' means 'railway station'. The building had so many elegant and fine details around the windows.
And the other side.

Aalden farmhouse
One more post with photos from our hike last Sunday, with a farmhouse and barn in the village of Aalden.
The separate barn in front of the farmhouse has been decorated with plaited reed, something that can be seen more in this region. To see a previous post about this click HERE.
I´m linking to Tom´s Barn Collective.

Nicolas Church inside
I found this small window in a side wall. It's a so-called quatrefoil (vierpas in Dutch), a decorative element consisting of a symmetrical shape which forms the overall outline of four partially overlapping circles of the same diameter. It is found in art, architecture, heraldry, and traditional Christian symbolism. The word quatrefoil means 'four leaves', referring specifically to a four-leaved clover, but applies in general to four-lobed shapes in various contexts. (from Wikipedia)
Another interesting detail from the Dutch Wikipedia site about the church is that they say that this quatrefoil probably served as a 'hagioscope' or 'squint', an architectural term for a small opening or tunnel at seated eye-level through the wall of a church, that enables a view for one or more worshippers in side-chapels, chantry chapels, or other parts of the church from which the high altar was not visible.
If you're interested check the link for hagioscope for more facts.

Wernigerode
During our stay in the Harz region in Germany we visited the old city centre of Wernigerode, a wonderful place.
With its many colourful and half-timbered buildings it has the nickname "Bunte Stadt am Harz", which is German for "Colourful city in the Harz"

Work in progress
The train station area in Assen has been a building site since 2016, but it is all going to be finished later this year. This photo was taken from the temporary bridge that takes train passengers to the other platforms...
...and this is the new roof construction from underneath.

A view from the top floor
The top floor of the Fundatie Museum in Zwolle was built in the shape of an egg, or a cloud as some people see it. (see an earlier post HERE) The view outside offers this: ..
.. the old city centre of Zwolle, with the Peperbus tower there on the left.

Optician's building
"If you have to live in a crowd, you don't have to look like it" is the slogan of Post & Everaarts optician in the old centre of Leeuwarden. Isn't it a beautiful building?
