At the German border

Taking this photo I am standing at one of the smaller border crossings just outside the village of Coevorden; behind the watch tower is Germany. The border follows the water of the Schoonebeekerdiep to the left. I don't think the watch-tower has had any other function than a bird-watch, or maybe a deer-watch.
Maybe you remember seeing the sculpture on the left of the photo, it's the 'Waterzwaard' or 'Water Sword' I told you about before, see my post HERE.

'Water Sword'

This sculpture by Dutch sculptor Adri de Fluiter (1940) is called 'Waterzwaard' or 'Water Sword'. It is placed just outside the village of Coevorden, on the parting of the canals 'Coevorden-Picardië-kanaal' on the right and 'Schoonebeekerdiep' on the left. With his sculpture De Fluiter wants to express that the canals lost their functions as transport ways for vessels; the sword symbolically splits 'then' and 'now'.

The photo was made earlier this month on a sunny and cold Sunday afternoon.

Parking spots for women

Apart from the big parking place behind me on the photo, and next to a parking spot for disabled people, this supermarket in Coevorden also has three parking spots especially for women!  ;))

Coevorden water tower

The water tower in Coevorden dates from 1914 and was designed by architect J.P. Hazeu. The 32,2 meter high tower is located near the Van Heutszpark, the town's park. The structure was thoroughly renovated in 2004 and was given the status national heritage site. In 2014 the outside was taken on which made it look brand-new again.

Since I grew up in the town of Coevorden and lived there for 35 years I must have rode this road (Dr Picardtlaan) a zillion times by bicycle. Lots of memories!

Have a wonderful weekend :)

showcase

Following up on yesterday's blogpost about the entrance of the Arsenaal in Coevorden, this is a picture of one of the horizontal showcases in the floor. TORECO stands for 'Stichting TOeristisch REcreatief COevorden', referring to the tourist info in the building.
In the showcase are typical 'tourist things' like a pair of walking shoes, a map of the region, a (miniature) bicycle, and some postcards.

the plan on the floor

This is the entrance of the Arsenaal, a historical and multifunctional building in the centre of Coevorden. Inside are the library, tourist info and museum. The image on the floor here shows the star shaped fortification plan of Coevorden, this is how the city looked like at the end of the 16th century.
When you would take a view from the sky on the city today, some parts of the star shape can still be seen.

De Vlijt

The high and narrow building is more than a 100 years old and was built by Gerson Levie -a grain merchant then-, to function as a grain storage in the harbour of Coevorden. A few years ago a restoration saved it from total decay, and now it's the location for hotel De Vlijt. I haven't been inside but according to photo's on their website it looks beautiful inside with many details from old times.

New Year's resolution menu

I personally believe that when you want to start working on your health, you do not necessarily have to wait until January 1st. But I guess that if "a new Year / a fresh start" works for you, you should! :)
A well known restaurant in Coevorden currently offers a 'New Year's resolution menu', and with that they promise you not only a delicious but also a healthy dinner, according to their website. I know from experience that they serve excellent food.. And, 3 courses for eur 19,95 is really not bad either!
