To be honest I had never taken much notice of the manhole covers during earlier visits to Deventer, but they are worth having a closer look at!
Can you see what it says on the first line? Once you figured that out, see how the letters mix and turn until the person standing across you can do the same ..
Enjoy your Saturday :)

Oldehove church tower
The Oldehove is an unfinished church tower in the old city of Leeuwarden. During construction -around the year of 1530- the tower began to sag and the project was stopped. In 1595 the then derelict church was demolished, but the brick tower remains. Today it leans more than the tower of Pisa in Italy!
The Oldehove is listed as national heritage. And pictured on manhole covers throughout the city..

Manhole cover sign
Remarkable signs in the St Jacobsstraat in Leeuwarden: 7 manhole covers that direct the way to Santiago de Compostela. The St Jacobsstraat is part of the well-known pilgrimage route leading to the shrine of the apostle St James the Great in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Spain.
Each manhole cover has the words "CAMPUS STELLAE" -referring to Santiago de Compostela- and each pictures a shell referring to a part of the human body. The photo above shows the first cover with a whelk ("wulk" in Dutch), which stands for the Pilgrim's feet on the shell-path that will lead him to Santiago de Compostela.
I'm linking to signs, signs.

Royal manhole cover
Over 400 of these special manhole covers picturing our King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima were produced as a gift for just as many Dutch towns and cities in 2013, when on April 30 former Queen Beatrix abdicated in favour of her son.
I spotted this one in the village of Wedde in Groningen, near the Castle of Wedde.
