newspaper office 'Nieuwsblad van het Noorden' #1

Concentrating on Art Nouveau during a city walk in Groningen last summer, we passed this remarkable building on the corner of the Gedempte Zuiderdiep and Eerste Drift. From 1903 until 1997 this used to be the office of the former regional newspaper 'Nieuwsblad van het Noorden' (Newspaper of the North), owned by press agency Hazewinkel Pers. Nowadays the newspaper is named 'Dagblad van het Noorden' (Daily North). The building's design is by architect Gerrit Nijhuis.

It has a large leaded window in the centre, as seen from the outside..

.. and here from the inside (so a mirror image), as we were kindly invited to have a look inside.

I will show you more of the outside wall tiles tomorrow.

Tuk Tuk Express

An original and funny way to do some sightseeing on the island Texel is from inside a Tuk Tuk! The three wheeled vehicles are for rent in the harbour of the town of Oudeschild. And I liked the sign as well!  :)

birdfeeder

I saw this duck as a birdfeeder for sale at a flower shop in town. Every year we see new creations, some are quite funny too! I think it's a bit early in the Autumn to start feeding the birds outside, but days will get colder and November is nearly there..

bye bye apple tree..

This is what happened to the apple tree in our garden today.. :(  ! The storm that we had became really heavy around noon here. Luckily the tree just fell on the grass and didn't cause any more damage. The weather looks OK in this picture with some blue sky, but it was really bad to be outside..

When the worst was over, our neighbor helped to cut the branches and the rest of the tree down. This is what's left of it:

It was the worst storm since 1990 and much damage was done in our country everywhere. In Amsterdam a woman died when a tree fell on her.

Greek stray cats

Again some photo's from Greece, the last ones (for now). When we visited Athens a few years ago we were amazed by the many stray dogs, here on the island Kos it was all about cats. They were literally everywhere. Sometimes sad and not looking so healthy, but others ones seemed to do fine.

This one seemed to say: please take me home?

Voorlopig de laatste paar foto's van Griekenland. Toen we een paar jaar geleden in Athene waren waren we verbaasd over de vele zwerfhonden, hier op Kos zie je echt overal zwerfkatten. Sommigen zielig en ongezond, maar anderen leken weer o.k.

Deze leek te willen zeggen: neem me alsjeblieft mee naar huis?

Blue and white are the colors from Greece. Not only in the national flag, but everywhere: houses, doors, windows, and this sign for instance that we noticed upon arrival by boat on the island of Nisyros.

Blauw en wit zijn de kleuren van Griekenland. Niet alleen zijn het de kleuren van de nationale vlag, maar je ziet ze overal: huizen, deuren, ramen, en dit bord bijvoorbeeld dat we zagen na aankomst per boot op het eiland Nisyros.

what is this?

We found this creature sized 10-12 cm (0,33 to 0,39 ft) on the roof of our rental car one day last week in Greece. Our first thought was a grasshopper, but then decided that grasshoppers don't have a pointed head like this one. Do they? What do you think this is?

We ontdekten dit diertje van 10-12 cm groot op het dak van onze huurauto vorige week toen we in Griekenland waren. Eerst dachten we aan een sprinkhaan, maar bedachten toen dat sprinkhanen niet zo'n spitse kop hebben. Toch? Heb jij enig idee?

During the Summer it is a busy area, Sneek is very popular for all kinds of watersports. While we were there, the bridge closed every now and then to let cars pass, then it opened again quickly..

's Zomers is het rond en in Sneek erg druk met alles wat met watersport te maken heeft. Toen wij er waren ging de brug af en toe even dicht zodat auto's verder konden, maar daarna ging de brug snel weer open..

Ruvallen

When we stayed in Funäsdalen in Sweden last August, this group of houses called 'Ruvallen' was a starting point of one of the hikes we made. In Swedish it is called a 'fäbod': a place were farmers and their families live during the summer to have their livestock graze common land.

Tijdens ons verblijf in Funäsdalen in Zweden afgelopen augustus, was dit groepje huizen met de naam 'Ruvallen' het startpunt van één van de wandelingen die we gemaakt hebben. In het Zweeds wordt dit 'fäbod' genoemd: een plek waar boeren met hun familie tijdens de zomer wonen om hun vee te laten grazen op een gemeenschappelijke weide.

These kind of fences are very common in Sweden. They must be very strong, as they have to carry a lot of snow in the Winter.

Dit soort hekken zie je overal in Zweden. Ze moeten wel sterk zijn, om tijdens de winter de vele sneeuw te kunnen dragen.

Ruvallen is a private area. To reach it from the main road you have to drive a toll road for 2 km.

Ruvallen is privégebied. Om er vanaf de doorgaande weg te komen moet je de laatste 2 km over een tolweg.

Public phone booths have become rare these days, but have a look at this beauty! We found it this summer in the town of Hudiksvall, in Sweden.

Telefooncellen zijn schaars tegenwoordig, maar kijk hier eens naar! We vonden 'm afgelopen zomer in Hudiksvall, in Zweden.

Vrijersduun

Going from the town of Nes to the beach, you pass a dune with a stone saying 'Vrijersduun', or 'lovers dune'. It is part of a row of dunes there on the island Ameland, grown with bushes and trees, with a street on one side and houses on the other. I tried to find more information about the why and when, but to no avail! So if you happen to know more, I would very much like to know. Thanks! :)

Als je vanuit Nes naar het strand gaat, kom je langs het 'vrijersduun', dat hoort bij een met bomen en struiken begroeide duinenrij op Ameland, met aan de ene kant een weg en aan de andere kant huizen. Ik heb geprobeerd wat meer informatie te vinden over het hoe en waarom, maar tevergeefs! Dus als jij meer weet, zou ik het graag horen. Dank je wel! :)

Den Burg, Texel

seal rescue

Inside the seal sanctuary of Ecomare on the island Texel, sick or wounded seals, or young ones left by their mother, are getting all the care they need. As soon as the animals are healthy enough to take care of themselves, they are brought back to sea in these kind of boxes.

In de zeehondenopvang van Ecomare op Texel krijgen zieke of gewonde zeehonden, of jongen die in de steek zijn gelaten door hun moeder, alle zorg die ze nodig hebben. Zodra ze weer gezond genoeg zijn om voor zichzelf te zorgen, worden ze in dit soort kratten terug naar zee gebracht.
