Discovering all of Bruges we spotted this sign saying 'Fietsstraat' ('Bicycle Street') and wondered what it meant, as it's not a sign we'd seen before. According to the internet, in a Bicycle Street motor vehicles are allowed (obviously), however they may not overtake cyclists -however there isn't much space left for that-, and the speed limit is 30 km/u (about 18 mph).
Well, the only vehicles we saw in this street were cars parked at both sides, and cars passing us, no bicycles..
I'm linking to signs, signs.
...a small car is needed here!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenDe bedoeling is goed, nu de fietsende Belgen nog.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenWow, it's not often you see the bikes having more right of way than cars Marleen, interesting!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenWouldn't want to ride a bike there or here for that matter. Roads are not wide enough to feel safe.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenI'd be a bit nervous of the cars there!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenI could handle 18mph. :-)
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThat is something I have never seen. It does not look too appealing for bicyclists though!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenDas 'n nieuwe en niet de slechtste. Leuk.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenOdd to see the one car lane seemingly crowded by cars from the other direction in the other lanes.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenIt's very nice sign, I cannot see it here in Finland.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThis idea exists for about 20 years and comes from Germany. It is used when there is no space for a seperate bicycle lane. The rules differ per country. In Germany only cars with a destination in that street are allowed. Cars with an other destenition should use an other street. So there you see a few cars on such a street. In NL cars are allowed but should respect the cyclists. They may overtake a cylist when there is enough space. That's why they make these street not so wide. The amount of cars should be below 2500/day and should be less then the amount of cyclists. This is unfortunately not allways te case. But the overall results are OK, when such a street is not too long.
