Last Saturday we enjoyed taking part in a guided tour through the beautiful and historical city of Deventer. This gable stone on one of the houses at the Assenstraat, picturing a pig on a barrel, was made by Dutch sculptor Anton Geerlings in 1984, so it's actually not that old. The text underneath the barrel ("DAT REGENVERCKEN") refers to the name this building had in former days, because of a deep well that used to be in the back garden.
In old Dutch the word "vercken" means 'large well' or 'large water well', and "regen" is Dutch for 'rain'.
...what a nice find.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenWhat a nice sculpture, I like it very much.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenPigs are adventurous and inquisitive creatures but I've never seen one balancing on a barrel before! It's a nice sculpture though.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenLeuk zo'n toer met een gids, dan zie je toch weer andere dingen waar je anders aan voorbijloopt.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenIt feels much older than it is. The artist certainly gave it that feeling.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenWaarschijnlijk wordt het varkentje daar gewassen. Geweldig!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThank You for sharing this gem!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenMooie gevelsteen en weer wat geleerd.
