Waaiboei

De "Waaiboei" is een bijna 8 meter hoge tuimelaar die op de dijk staat bij Nieuwe Statenzijl, aan de Dollard in het noordoosten van Groningen.

The "Waaiboei" (literally 'blow buoy') is a nearly 8 meters (about 26 ft) high rocker standing on the dike in Nieuwe Statenzijl, at the Dollard in the north east of Groningen. 

De met beton verzwaarde, bolvormige onderkant, staat los en beweegt met de windkracht en windrichting mee. Het kunstwerk is gemaakt door kunstenaar Martin Borchert.

The round shaped bottom is made heavy with concrete and stands detached, so it can move with the wind force and direction of the wind. This piece of art was created by sculptor Martin Borchert.

Dit is een foto uit 2008 toen wij hier waren tijdens een flinke storm. Ik leun achterover 'in' de wind, terwijl de waaiboei voorover geblazen wordt.

This is a photo made in 2008 when we were here during a heavy storm. You can see me leaning backwards in the wind, while the buoy is blown forward.

Dit uithangbord zou in Duitsland niet bijzonder opvallen, ware het niet dat deze foto in Bad Nieuweschans in Nederland is gemaakt. Dit grensplaatsje is duidelijk op bezoekers uit Duitsland gericht..

This sign ('Zimmer Frei' is German for 'Room Available') probably wouldn't attract as much attention in Germany as it does here, in Bad Nieuweschans in the Netherlands. This town near the border is obviously orientating on visitors from Germany..

Je vindt het aan de gevel van café Reiderland aan de Hoofdstraat.

You can find it at the outside wall of Café Reiderland at the Hoofdstraat.

P is for the Prince who became King today

Nederland heeft een nieuwe koning! Door het ondertekenen van de akte van abdicatie bevestigde Koningin Beatrix formeel afstand te doen van de troon, waarmee Prins Willem-Alexander de nieuwe Koning van Nederland werd. 

The Netherlands has a new King! The official moment where it all came down to was signing the instrument of abdication. With this Queen Beatrix formally stepped down from the throne and Prince Willem-Alexander became the new King of the Netherlands.

De prinsesjes Ariane, Amalia en Alexia, de 3 dochters van Koning Willem-Alexander en Koningin Máxima, waren ook aanwezig bij de ceremonie. (beide foto's hierboven zijn genomen van het tv-scherm)

The young princesses Ariane, Amalia and Alexia, the 3 daughters of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima, were also present at the ceremony. (both pictures above were taken from the television screen)

Nordic Art / Groninger Museum

Ik ben ook pas geleden in het Groninger Museum naar de expositie 'Nordic Art 1880-1920' geweest. Bij deze een paar impressies, waarbij je ook een beeld krijgt van het kleurige interieur van het museum. 

Recently I also visited the Groninger Museum to see the exhibition 'Nordic Art 1880-1920'. These are a few impressions, also meant to give you an idea of the colourful interior of the museum.

De tentoonstelling is een ode aan de volken en culturen van de Noordse landen en geeft een overzicht van 19e en 20e eeuwse Noord-Europese schilderkunst.

The exhibition is a tribute to the peoples and cultures of the Nordic countries, and provides an overview of 19th and 20th-century North European painting.

De schilderijen met landschappen, portretten en indrukken uit het dagelijkse plattelandsleven laten zowel overeenkomsten als verschillen tussen de Noordse landen zien. Voor mij, als liefhebber van Scandinavië was het erg interessant en de moeite waard.

The paintings showing landscapes, portraits and scenes from everyday rural life, display both the similarities and the differences between the Nordic countries. For me, as a fan of Scandinavia it was very interesting and worth going.

Dit naamloze sculptuur heeft wel wat weg van een "tekening" van blauw geschilderd staal. Het staat aan het Kelfkensbos in Nijmegen, vlakbij museum Het Valkhof.

This nameless sculpture somewhat resembles a "drawing" of blue painted steel. It's location is the Kelfkensbos in Nijmegen, close to museum Het Valkhof.

De maker is de Belgische kunstenaar Narcisse Tordoir, die woont en werkt in Antwerpen.

The creator is the Belgian sculptor Narcisse Tordoir, who lives and works in Antwerp.

Nu de troonswisseling dichterbij komt, verplaatst de NS haar reizigers tijdelijk niet meer van A naar B, maar van B naar A. Ofwel: de NS neemt ons mee 'van Beatrix naar Alexander' en hoopt zo iedereen te stimuleren om op die dag de trein te nemen i.p.v. de auto. Deze foto is genomen op Groningen Centraal Station.

Now that the abdication is coming near, the Dutch railways (NS) temporarily do not bring travellers from A to B anymore, but from B to A. In other words, they take us 'from Beatrix to Alexander' and by this encourage people to take the train that day instead of the car. I took this picture at the train station in Groningen.

It's a bit hidden in a side street of the Voorstraat in Bad Nieuweschans.

O is for Once... a railway track

Als je het niet zou weten zou je het waarschijnlijk nooit vermoeden, maar dit stille zandpad -ergens tussen Gasselte en Gieten- was ooit een spoorlijn. Tussen 1905 en circa 1970 reden hier treinen van de NOLS (Noordoosterlocaalspoorweg-Maatschappij) op een enkelspoor de route Assen-Stadskanaal.

If you didn't know you probable would never have guessed, but this quiet path -somewhere between Gasselte and Gieten- once was a railway track. Between 1905 and about 1970 trains from the NOLS (North East local railway-Company) passed here on a single track on the route Assen-Stadskanaal. -please note that the link refers to a site only in Dutch.

De (nu gerestaureerde) spoorbrug vlakbij Gasselte herinnert uit die tijd.

The (now restored) railway bridge near the town of Gasselte dates from that time.

Monday mural

Ik was afgelopen zaterdag in Nijmegen. Lopend van het NS station naar het centrum zag ik deze fraaie muurschildering.

I visited Nijmegen last Saturday. Walking from the train station to the shopping centre I spotted this nice mural.

KM -1

Ik was verbaasd om aan het begin van de dijk bij Nieuwe Statenzijl dit paaltje met KM-1 te zien. Min 1 km? Ik zocht thuis op internet en vond dat dit blijkbaar een 'foutje' is geweest van Rijkswaterstaat. Tijdens het uitmeten van de palen had men een kilometer voor de grens de paal 0 in de grond geslagen. De grens van Duitsland met Nederland begint hierdoor met -1 in plaats van 0...

I was surprised to see this KM-1 marking on the edge of the dike near Nieuwe Statenzijl. Minus 1 km? Back home I looked it up on the net and found this apparently was caused by a 'small mistake' by Rijkswaterstaat (an agency part of the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment). When measuring the distances, the 0 marking was placed a kilometer (1 km equals 0,6 miles) away from the border. So the actual border between Germany and our country starts with -1 instead of 0...

views of dementia / Drents Museum

Nog een interessante expositie momenteel in het Drents Museum is 'Gezichten van dementie', met portretten in aquarel van Herman van Hoogdalem en gefilmde portretten van Gijs Wanders. Van Hoogdalem zegt: "Ik probeer de vele gezichten van dit proces te laten zien: de wanhoop, het lijden, de onzekerheid, de pijn, de stilte, de leegte, de onthechting, de berusting en wat in woorden niet te vangen is. Dwingend, eerlijk, soms pijnlijk maar altijd integer."

Another interesting exhibition in the Drents Museum now is 'Views of dimentia', with aquarel paintings of Herman van Hoogdalem and filmed portraits by Gijs Wanders. Van Hoogdalem says: "I try to picture the many faces of this proces: the despair, suffering,  uncertainty, pain, silence, detachment, meekness and what cannot be said in words. Compelling, honest, sometimes awkward though always righteous."

De gezichtsuitdrukkingen op de schilderijen zijn ongelooflijk echt en maakten een diepe indruk op me.

The facial expressions on the paintings are incredibly realistic and impressed me very much.

The Soviet Myth / Drents Museum

Het Drents Museum in Assen toont op dit moment een verzameling van ongeveer 70 schilderijen die de Sovjetmaatschappij idealiseerden. Ze zijn gemaakt in de Sovjet-Unie van 1932-1960,  (grotendeels) onder de dictatuur van Stalin. De thema's varieren van landschap en industrie, leiderscultus en familie, tot sport en het nieuwe imago van vrouwen. De schilderijen zijn in bruikleen van het State Russian Museum in Sint Petersburg.

The Drents Museum in Assen currently exhibits about 70 paintings idealising the Soviet society. They were created in the Soviet Union in the years 1932-1960, (mostly) during the Stalin dictatorship. The themes vary from countryside and industry, leader cult and family, sports and the new image of women. The art is on loan from the State Russian Museum in Saint Petersburg.

Ik wou er al lange tijd naar toe en ben blij er geweest te zijn. Ik was verrast en onder de indruk van de diversiteit van de kleurrijke (en vaak reusachtige) schilderijen.

I wanted to go there for some time and I am happy I did. I was surprised and impressed by the variety of colourful (and most massive) paintings.

In het Veenkoloniaal Museum in Veendam is behalve alles over de geschiedenis van dit gebied, ook moderne kunst te zien. Eén van de exposities (nog tot eind mei) heeft de titel ‘Beweging en poëzie in kleur’.

Apart from facts about the history of this region, the Peat District Museum in Veendam also exhibits contemporary art. One of the expositions (running until the end of May) is named 'Movement and poetry in colour'.

Hierbij worden werken getoond van het Duitse kunstenaarsechtpaar Margit en Rolf Hillen.

It shows the work of the German artist couple Margit and Rolf Hillen.

N is for National Geographic window project

Een tijdje terug vertelde ik al eens over het project dat de regio Oost-Groningen en National Geographic in 2010 startten om deze regio in noord Nederland onder de aandacht te brengen. Het felgele logo van National Geographic is daarbij bedoeld als een venster, dat 'het mooiste uit Groningen omlijst'.

   

A while ago I told you about the project that the region East Groningen and National Geographic started to attract attention to this region in the north of the Netherlands. The bright yellow National Geographic logo is used here as a window, to 'frame the most beautiful spots in Groningen'.

Ook Nieuwe Statenzijl is onderdeel van dit project. Door het raam zie je trouwens in de verte de Kiekkaaste, de vogelkijkhut die ik je een paar dagen geleden liet zien..

Also taking part in this project is Nieuwe Statenzijl. Note that you can see the Kiekkaaste in the distance, the bird observation post that I showed you a few days ago..
