The sculpture named 'De Steenzetter' (someone who places the stones during the process of building a dike) was placed halfway the Afsluitdijk on its 50th anniversary. Sculpturor Ineke van Dijk (1940) created this sculpture after she had watched men doing this work; they stood in this unconvenient pose all day, holding and moving the heavy stones until they fitted.
Wow! They must all have developed back trouble.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenBackache!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenBeautiful sculpture - whenever I'm in Holland, I at least go once over the Afsluitdijk! And I love the peacefulness of it!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenOh my! People talk about back-breaking work -- that job really really was. Beautiful sculpture and makes me wish I could thank every person who works so hard so that the rest of us can live safely and happily.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenI can imagine the backaches. Quite a view from the top!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenI could do that for about 30 seconds before I seized up. A wonderful memorial to those hard-working individuals.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenIt has to be very strong job.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenLovely art for memorial.
I'm sure that was hard work. Love the roughness of this sculpture.
