Soestdijk Palace

Gisteren bezochten we Paleis Soestdijk in Baarn, dat meer dan 60 jaar lang de residentie was van toenmalig Koningin Juliana en Prins Bernard, tot aan hun dood in 2004. Zij waren de grootouders van Koning Willem-Alexander. Het paleis bestaat uit een centraal gedeelte met 2 vleugels en dateert uit de 17e eeuw.

We visited Soestdijk Palace in Baarn yesterday, the home for over six decades of the former Queen Juliana and her husband, Prince Bernhard, until their deaths in 2004. They were the grandparents of King Willem-Alexander. The palace consists of a central block and 2 wings, and dates from the 17th century.

I herinner me Paleis Soestdijk vooral van vroeger van het jaarlijkse defilé op 30 april, de verjaardag van Koningin Juliana. Een lange stoet mensen trok dan langs dit bordes waar de Koninklijke familie op stond. Het bordes was trouwens veel kleiner dan ik gedacht had, men stond vast dicht bij elkaar..

I remember Soestdijk Palace mostly from the past from the annual parade on April 30, the birthday of Queen Juliana. A huge procession walked by these steps on which the Royal Family was standing. By the way these steps were a lot smaller than I had imagined, they must have stood close together..

In 2006 werd het paleis opengesteld voor het publiek en doet het dienst als museum, in afwachting van een besluit over de definitieve bestemming van het gebouw.

In 2006 Soestdijk Palace was opened to the public and it is a museum now, pending a decision about its future use.

Aan de gevel van Grote Markt 42 in Nijmegen, op de hoek met de Grote Straat, hangt een reusachtige vulpen. Dit is een erfenis van de voormalige kantoorboekhandel Theo Biessels, die hier van 1924 tot 1990 gevestigd was. Toen deze zaak sloot, is de vulpen blijven hangen.

At the facade of Grote Markt 42 in Nijmegen, at the corner of the Grote Straat, hangs a giant fountain pen. This is a legacy of the former office bookstore Theo Biessels, that was located here from 1924 until 1990. When the store closed, the fountain pen stayed in it's place.

Tegenwoordig zit er een cafe, dat dezelfde naam gehouden heeft als de vroegere boekhandel.

The café that is located here nowadays kept the same name as the bookstore.

R is for Reiderwolderpolder

Nederland heeft enkele duizenden (!) polders: door waterkeringen (dijken) omgeven gebieden waarvan de waterstand kunstmatig geregeld kan worden. Een voorbeeld is de Reiderwolderpolder, in het noordoosten van Groningen. Via een 'coupure', ook wel dijkgat genoemd, rij je hier de polder in. In geval van calamiteiten kan deze opening gesloten worden met rijen balken of een deur.

In the Netherlands you can find several thousands (!) of polders: pieces of land enclosed by embankments (dikes) in which the waterlevel is handled through manually operated devices. One of them is the Reiderwolderpolder, in the northeast of the province Groningen. You enter the polder by a 'coupure', an opening in the dike that -in case of a calamity- can be closed by rows of beams or a door.

De Reiderwolderpolder ontstond in de 19e eeuw door drooglegging van een gebied dat in de eeuwen ervoor was overstroomd door de Dollard, die tussen noord Nederland en Duitsland stroomt. De afwatering wordt geregeld door de sluis bij Nieuwe Statenzijl. 

The land of the Reiderwolderpolder was reclaimed in the 19th century from an area that had been overflowed during several centuries by the Dollard, a bay between the northern Netherlands and Germany. The drainage is managed by the locks of Nieuwe Statenzijl.

't Witte Kockhus

In 't Witte Kockhus aan de Langestreek op Schiermonnikoog vind je, behalve planten, vooral allerlei tuinbeelden. Altijd leuk om even rond te kijken.

In " 't Witte Kockhus" at the Langestreek on the island Schiermonnikoog, are besides plants all kinds of garden sculptures to see and for sale. It's always great to have a look here.

Het enige dorp op het eiland heet ook Schiermonnikoog. Je komt hier weinig voertuigen tegen; het eiland is auto-luw. Praktisch alleen de eilandbewoners bezitten een speciale vergunning om hun eigen auto te houden.

The only village on the island is also called Schiermonnikoog. You don't see many cars here; the island is virtually car-free as only the islanders have a special license to keep their own car.

Als je ooit in het Groninger museum bent geweest, ben je vast via deze wenteltrap naar beneden en later weer naar boven gegaan. Het ontwerp met kleurrijk mozaïekbeton is van de Italiaanse architect Alessandro Mendini.

If you ever visited the Groninger Museum you most likely went down and up again later by these winding stairs. The design of colorful mosaic concrete is by Italian architect Alessandro Mendini.

Citroën U23

Afgelopen donderdag reed een aantal historische voertuigen door onze regio, zoals deze prachtige Citroën U23: een 2-ton 'lichtgewicht' truck die vanaf 1936 tot de begin jaren zestig werd gemaakt.

Last Thursday a number of historical vehicals drove through our region, like this beautiful Citroën U23: a light (2-ton) truck that was produced from 1936 until the early sixties.

Dit kleine ventje mocht een tijdje op de bestuurdersstoel zitten. Iemand deed hem voor hoe hij kon claxonneren, en toen het hem uiteindelijk zélf lukte was hij zichtbaar blij verrast..

This little guy was allowed to sit in the driver's seat for a while. Someone showed him how to honk, and when he finally managed to do it all by himself he was clearly happily surprised..

..en uiterst tevreden achteraf. 

..and very satisfied afterwards.

Een prachtige plek om even te rusten tijdens een wandeling in de bossen van Gees, maar je moet er wel wat moeite voor doen om je voeten droog te houden.. 

 

A beautiful spot to have a rest here in the forest of Gees, though you have to put in some effort to keep your feet dry..

Bij elke grotere strandopgang op Schiermonnikoog vind je deze informatieborden. Behalve een plattegrond van het eiland en de plek waar je staat, wordt aangegeven wat je wel en niet mag doen.

Q is for Quay

Aan de Waalkade in Nijmegen zijn de ronde gele meerpalen omgetoverd tot driedimensionale smileys. Ik vind ze leuk!

On the quay at the river Waal in Nijmegen, the round yellow maritime bollards have been transformed to three dimensional smileys. I like them!

Waaiboei

De "Waaiboei" is een bijna 8 meter hoge tuimelaar die op de dijk staat bij Nieuwe Statenzijl, aan de Dollard in het noordoosten van Groningen.

The "Waaiboei" (literally 'blow buoy') is a nearly 8 meters (about 26 ft) high rocker standing on the dike in Nieuwe Statenzijl, at the Dollard in the north east of Groningen. 

De met beton verzwaarde, bolvormige onderkant, staat los en beweegt met de windkracht en windrichting mee. Het kunstwerk is gemaakt door kunstenaar Martin Borchert.

The round shaped bottom is made heavy with concrete and stands detached, so it can move with the wind force and direction of the wind. This piece of art was created by sculptor Martin Borchert.

Dit is een foto uit 2008 toen wij hier waren tijdens een flinke storm. Ik leun achterover 'in' de wind, terwijl de waaiboei voorover geblazen wordt.

This is a photo made in 2008 when we were here during a heavy storm. You can see me leaning backwards in the wind, while the buoy is blown forward.

Dit uithangbord zou in Duitsland niet bijzonder opvallen, ware het niet dat deze foto in Bad Nieuweschans in Nederland is gemaakt. Dit grensplaatsje is duidelijk op bezoekers uit Duitsland gericht..

This sign ('Zimmer Frei' is German for 'Room Available') probably wouldn't attract as much attention in Germany as it does here, in Bad Nieuweschans in the Netherlands. This town near the border is obviously orientating on visitors from Germany..
