The Korte Ademhalingssteeg ("Short Alley of Breaths") connects the Great Church Square with the Central Square in Zwolle. The origin of this name is rather gruesome; it refers to the days in history in which criminals were lead to the scaffold at the central square. In this alley they literally drew their last breaths before being executed.
I'm linking to signs, signs.
Ja toen namen ze geen blad voor de mond.

One of the things I find most intriguing about Europe is the history and the fact that so many historical artifacts remain. That is a rather gruesome name but we're still executing criminals - a number of which turn out to be innocent. I read a story yesterday where one of our states put to death a man convicted of stealing $2000 worth of goods. Now that's really gruesome!
