View on Huisduinen, a small village near Den Helder at the point where the North Sea becomes the Wadden Sea. Across the water in the distance is the island of Texel. The lighthouse is called "Lange Jaap"("Long James"), a cast iron tower constructed in 1822. At a height of 55 m it is one of the tallest traditional lighthouses in the world.
Seen from the other side. I'm linking to Skywatch Friday.
The height and colour make the lighthouse a real standout.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenHi Marleen, that's what I love about Blogger: I only learned now through your post that the North Sea becomes the Wadden Sea near you! Amazing height and color - that lighthouse. Greetings Jo
BeantwoordenVerwijderenEcht waar, de hoogste? Je kan hem niet missen zo hoog.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenAls die niet opvalt weet ik het ook niet meer.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenWhat a feature on this landscape! It's name is peculiar & I wonder if it was named after James?
BeantwoordenVerwijderenAn amazing engineering work for the 19 th century!
The sky is so dramatic too!
...what a beautiful sight.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenI loooove 'Long James' Marleen! Who needs tall dark and handsome when LJ is there ☺
BeantwoordenVerwijderenI like that lighthouse very much!!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenOh wow! That lighthouse is impressive. I really like the color. Those clouds in your second shot make the sky look so dramatic!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenI was thinking that being that tall and that red, it may not even need the light as it can be seen from long distances. But you'd still need the light at night. An amazing and fascinating structure. I'm wondering if it's open to the public?
BeantwoordenVerwijderenHi Lowell. I read that since several years the lighthouse isn't open anymore for visitors -due to safety reasons. It is still active as a lighthouse though.
VerwijderenA distinctive looking lighthouse!
BeantwoordenVerwijderendaar kan je niet naast kijken Marleen
BeantwoordenVerwijdereneen prachtige foto !
alvast een prettig weekend gewenst
Very impressive Marleen, the height and the colour are very unique. It's a beauty!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenWhile the Hatteras lighthouse was being repaired, visitors couldn't climb it either. Now that it has been restored, though, folks are climbing it in droves. The last time I was there you even needed to make a reservation ahead of time.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenGorgeous! Love the bright red color. That must be a lot of steps to climb to get to the top!!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenLighthouses are so fascinating!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenHave a nice weekend!
